About this opportunity

Are you ready to lead a small, skilled team in delivering essential highway maintenance across Cumbria? Cumberland Council is seeking a proactive and experienced Highways Team Leader to supervise and organise a team of up to five operatives. You’ll oversee a variety of tasks including patching, drainage works, and traffic management, ensuring safety, quality, and performance on site.

Who we’re looking for

We’re looking for someone with a full UK driving licence, strong knowledge of highway materials and maintenance processes, and proven leadership experience. Certification in abrasive wheels and experience with plant and equipment are essential. Desirable qualifications include NVQs in Highway Maintenance or Team Leadership, and tickets such as CSCS, HIAB, and NRSWA. In return, you’ll be part of a supportive, community-focused council that values flexibility, safety, and professional development.

We’re also about potential over perfection and we can help you grow in the role and thrive in your career.

We’re looking for individuals who embody our organisation's core values: ambitious, collaborative, compassionate, empowering, and innovative. We believe in the power of these values to drive positive change, deliver excellent public services and shape a better future for our communities.

We’re also about potential over perfection and we can help you grow in the role and thrive in your career.
