With over 750 colleagues, we’re scaling our platforms, investing heavily in AI-driven initiatives, and expanding the engineering leadership that helps us deliver safely, quickly, and at scale.

Hybrid working: This UK-based role follows a hybrid model, with approximately 40% of time per month spent in our Tanfield (Edinburgh) office.

The Team

We’re looking for a hands‑on Software Engineering Manager / Team Lead to lead a high‑performing team of around 6 engineers, while remaining deeply involved in design and development. This is not a hands‑off management role. You’ll lead by example, setting technical direction, coaching engineers, and actively contributing to the codebase—particularly in areas such as AI‑enabled services, cloud architecture, and scalable data platforms. Your team works on cloud‑native applications processing very large datasets, delivering actionable insights to the US healthcare market. You’ll collaborate closely with Product, Architecture, and customer‑facing teams to shape solutions from concept to production.

Why this role is different

  • You’ll own both people leadership and technical delivery
  • You’ll lead work incorporating AI tooling, including:
    • Retrieval‑Augmented Generation (RAG)
    • AI‑powered initiatives and experimentation
    • Agentic frameworks and autonomous workflows
  • You’ll help define how AI is used responsibly and effectively in production healthcare software
  • You’ll influence platform direction, not just deliver tickets

You Will Be

Leadership & Team Management
  • Line manage and develop a team of ~6 software and automation engineers
  • Support engineers through coaching, mentoring, contribution reviews, career development, and performance management
  • Foster a collaborative, inclusive, and high‑accountability engineering culture
  • Manage team capacity, priorities, and delivery commitments
Hands‑on Technical Leadership
  • Remain actively involved in hands‑on development, architecture, and design decisions
  • Provide technical direction on cloud‑native, scalable, and AI‑enabled solutions
  • Ensure solutions are well‑architected, secure, maintainable, and aligned with SOLID and modern design principles
  • Lead by example in test‑driven development and continuous delivery
AI, Quality & Engineering Excellence
  • Help introduce and evolve AI capabilities across the platform, including RAG pipelines and agent‑based patterns
  • Maintain high standards for code quality, security, and testability (e.g. SonarQube, OWASP)
  • Work with peers to define and uphold engineering standards and best practices
  • Stay current with emerging technologies to continuously drive innovation

You Will Bring

Leadership & experience
  • Proven experience as a Software Engineering Manager, Team Lead, or Technical Lead
  • Demonstrated ability to lead, motivate, and develop engineers in fast‑paced environments
  • Extensive hands‑on development experience and architectural understanding
  • Experience building scalable, resilient, high‑performance cloud solutions
  • Practical experience with AI‑enabled systems, ideally including:
    • Retrieval‑Augmented Generation (RAG)
    • Agentic or autonomous workflow frameworks
  • Strong understanding of automated testing, CI/CD, and release management
  • Experience with cloud platforms (Azure preferred)
  • Solid knowledge of relational and/or non‑relational databases, data modelling, and performance

Ways of working

  • Comfortable balancing people leadership with hands‑on engineering
  • Strong problem‑solving and decision‑making skills
  • Confident communicating clearly with engineers, product managers, and senior stakeholders
  • A collaborative leader who coaches, mentors, and sets direction through action

Why Craneware?

  • Lead teams building AI‑powered healthcare platforms with real‑world impact
  • A role with true technical and people leadership responsibility
  • Long‑term product vision, stable growth, and meaningful engineering challenges
  • Strong focus on quality, trust, and sustainable delivery
  • Hybrid working that supports both flexibility and collaboration
