The post-holder will deal with a wide range of health needs in a primary care setting, ensuring the highest standards of care for all registered and temporary patients. Responsibilities will reflect requirements of the NHS GP Contracts, and as such may be subject to change as services adapt.

Main duties of the job:

  • 4/6 sessions a week with flexible times (open for discussion)

About us:

We have a fantastic opportunity for a salaried GP to join the team for 4/6 sessions per week. The practices are situated in a great location on the Sussex Coast. Easily commutable being only a 10-20 minute drive from Worthing, 30-minute drive from Chichester and 45-minute drive from Portsmouth. There are also great transport links to London. The practices have approx 29,300 patients and hold an abundance of knowledge with a team of 5 Partners, 14 Salaried GPs and a supportive multi-disciplinary team which includes an experienced and established nursing team, prescribing paramedics and large prescribing team with pharmacists and technicians and physiotherapists.

As a training practice (registrars and medical students), we have a strong education focus, placing high value on training and development. We have regular practice learning sessions, and support our teams in their professional development and special interests. We value a work life balance and are flexible with session and time requests. This role is a great opportunity for an experienced GP or newly qualified GP looking to start their career in primary care.

Job responsibilities:

  • In accordance with the practice timetable, the post-holder will make themselves available to undertake a variety of duties, including surgery consultations, telephone consultations and queries, visiting patients at home, checking and signing repeat prescriptions and dealing with queries, paperwork and correspondence in a timely fashion.
  • Making professional, autonomous decisions in relation to presenting problems, whether self-referred or referred from other health care workers within the organisation.
  • Assessing the health care needs of patients with undifferentiated and undiagnosed problems.
  • Screening patients for disease risk factors and early signs of illness.
  • Developing management plans for health in consultation with patients and in line with current practice disease management protocols.
  • Providing patients with support, advice and health education.
  • Admitting patients to hospital and referring to other care providers as appropriate.
  • Recording clear and contemporaneous consultation notes to agreed standards.
  • Collecting data for audit purposes when agreed.
  • Compiling and issuing electronic acute and repeat prescriptions (avoiding hand-written prescriptions whenever possible).
  • Prescribing in accordance with the Sussex ICB formulary (or generically) whenever this is clinically appropriate.
  • Weekly on-call duties pro rata.

  • Awareness of and compliance with all relevant practice policies/guidelines, e.g. prescribing, confidentiality, data protection, health and safety.
  • A commitment to life-long learning and audit to ensure evidence-based best practice.
  • Contributing to evaluation/audit and clinical standard setting within the organisation when agreed.
  • Contributing to the summarising of patient records and read-coding patient data as appropriate.
  • Attending training and events organised by the practice or other agencies, where appropriate.

In addition to maintaining continued education through attendance at any courses and/or study days necessary to ensure that professional development requirements for PREP are met, the post-holder will participate in any training programme implemented by the practice as part of this employment.

Person Specification:

  • Qualifications: Qualified GP MRCGP Vocational Training Certificate or equivalent JCPTGP General Practitioner (Certificate of Completion of Training CCT)
  • Eligibility: Full GMC Registration UK permit or right to work in the UK
  • Skills & Experience: Experience of working in a primary care environment, experience of continued professional development, experience of QOF and clinical audit, knowledge of the NHS, general understanding of the GMS contract, understanding of current issues and challenges facing primary care, ability to make good, clear, concise medical notes, both computerised and manual, outstanding level of clinical knowledge and skills commensurate with that of an experienced GP, excellent interpersonal and communication skills (written and oral), strong IT skills, clear, polite telephone manner, competent in the use of Office and Outlook, effective time management (Planning & Organising), commitment to education and training, ability to work as a team member and autonomously, excellent interpersonal skills, problem solving & analytical skills, ability to follow clinical policy and procedure.
  • Personal Qualities: Polite and confident, flexible and cooperative, motivated, forward thinker, problem solver with the ability to process information accurately and effectively, interpreting data as required, high levels of integrity and loyalty, sensitive and empathetic in distressing situations, ability to work under pressure / in stressful situations, ability to use own judgement, resources and common sense, effectively able to communicate and understand the needs of the patient, commitment to ongoing professional development, punctual and committed to supporting the team.
  • Other requirements: Car owner/driver, experience of medicines management, experience of ICB (formerly CCG) initiatives, experience of using TPP SystmOne, flexibility to work outside of core office hours.
