This specialist civil/structural consultancy is an award-winning firm that focuses on assessing, maintaining and extending the serviceable life of a wide range of damaged and deteriorating concrete structures. They are an Irish firm established over 20 years, with a growing London/M25 presence and workload. The London team are hugely busy and are looking for someone to head up this division.
The role would suit someone with at least 5 years of experience, which could be with a contractor or consultant. You need to be happy working autonomously, managing clients, projects and currently two junior staff. The idea will be for you to grow this team going forwards and be in charge of your own Business Unit. The MD is over from Ireland at least every couple of weeks and you would report to him directly.
The work is specialist and involves:
- forensic engineering and failure analysis
- structural assessment
- inspections and load testing
- cathodic protection
- structural health monitoring
- expert witness work
- materials testing and report writing
Structures could include water retaining structures, bridges, tunnels, buildings, underground chambers, wharfs, jetties, pipelines and car parks. The role will involve a mix of office work and site. You must be a good communicator and be prepared to get your hands dirty on site, collect material samples, do surveying, go up on high platforms for multi-storey buildings and go into tunnels and small spaces. You do need to be able to use a drill.
The role has a very broad scope and common sense and a good understanding of civil and structural works is essential. Some in situ materials testing is done, but the really technical stuff is sent off to a materials testing lab. The role is not a hands-on structural design role but will involve writing structural reports and offering solutions and recommendations. Ability to use Autocad is useful.
Driver essential. Willingness for occasional travel to Ireland would be useful. In addition to basic salary there is healthcare, paid OT, pension, laptop, phone, company car or mileage paid.
