GENERAL DESCRIPTION

The Automation Specialist is responsible for designing, developing, deploying, and maintaining automation workflows and API-based integrations that streamline the College’s identity lifecycle processes and support key infrastructure operations. The Specialist will work independently to gather requirements, propose solutions, and implement secure, reliable automation that improves account provisioning, reduces manual workload, and enhances the stability of infrastructure services. While IAM integrations and automation are the primary responsibility for this role, the Automation Specialist also contributes to security and infrastructure administration to ensure operational resilience.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

  • Identity & Access Management
    • Develop and maintain integrations using APIs (REST) and directory-based methods (e.g., LDAP, PowerShell) between enterprise systems and identity platforms, including RapidIdentity, Active Directory, and Azure AD/Entra ID.
    • Automate account lifecycle processes for faculty, staff, and students, including creation, updates, role-based access, and deprovisioning.
    • Implement secure attribute mapping, data transformation, and synchronization logic between HR, IAM, and directory systems, including Workday HRIS, Anthology SIS, and Slate CRM.
    • Configure and support federated identity services and protocols (SSO, SAML, SCIM) for cloud and on-premises applications.
    • Collaborate with HR, the Data, Systems, and Integrations (DSI) team, and consortium partners to design, test, and deploy IAM changes. Follow security best practices, including least privilege, secure credential handling, and change control for IAM workflows.
  • Automation & Integration Development
    • Develop and maintain production-grade automation solutions (PowerShell, Python, or similar) with robust error handling, logging, and monitoring.
    • Use version control (Git) to manage code and ensure consistency, traceability, and maintainability of automation workflows.
    • Build proactive health checks for IAM integrations and implement logging, monitoring, and alerting aligned with enterprise platforms (e.g., SIEM, cloud monitoring tools).
    • Troubleshoot and resolve issues across API, data, and integration layers.
    • Identify opportunities to automate manual operational tasks across infrastructure.
  • Infrastructure & Security Support (Training Provided)
    • Design, develop, and maintain Microsoft Logic Apps, Power Apps, and Power Automate flows to automate line-of-business processes.
    • Administer Azure AD/Entra ID and related cloud identity services.
    • Administer Azure resources as assigned.
    • Provide Tier 2 support for IAM, security, and infrastructure issues as assigned.
    • Contribute to security monitoring, compliance tasks, and tool deployments.
    • Participate in operational readiness reviews and assist in incident response when required.
  • Documentation & Reporting
    • Document IAM workflows, automation logic, and infrastructure configurations.
    • Maintain runbooks for troubleshooting and disaster recovery.
    • Track automation and infrastructure projects, providing regular updates to IT leadership.

REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES

The individual must possess knowledge, skills and ability to be able to successfully perform the essential functions of the position or be able to explain or demonstrate how the essential functions will be performed, with or without reasonable accommodation, using some other combination of skills and abilities.

  • Proven ability to develop and maintain production-ready automation solutions (PowerShell, Python, or similar).
  • Experience with APIs and integration patterns, including REST and/or SOAP-based services.
  • Experience working with directory services and identity platforms (e.g., Active Directory, Entra ID), including programmatic interaction (LDAP, PowerShell).
  • Experience working with relational databases (e.g., SQL Server) for querying, troubleshooting, and supporting integrations.
  • Familiarity with IAM concepts, lifecycle provisioning workflows, and directory services.
  • Strong understanding of solution deployment processes, lifecycle management, and best practices, with the ability to deploy, document, and maintain solutions in a consistent and sustainable manner across Windows and/or Azure environments.
  • Ability to clearly document processes, write technical instructions for both technical and non-technical audiences, and collaborate effectively with cross-functional teams.
  • Experience with version control (Git) and structured deployment practices.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills, with attention to detail.
  • Ability to work independently on long-term projects while managing operational responsibilities.

Must have access to reliable and secure computer and internet connection. Must maintain password protection for work files and records and ensure that no one else has access to password and login credentials at remote work site. Must have access to a dedicated and suitable workstation at remote location, including desk or table and supporting, upright chair. Must ensure workstation is safe and free from hazards. Familiarity with enterprise system integrations (e.g., HRIS such as Workday) is a plus. Familiarity with logging, monitoring, or SIEM platforms (e.g., Splunk, Azure Monitor) is a plus.

Education/Experience

Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Information Technology, or related field, OR equivalent relevant experience.

Preferred Qualification

Experience working in higher education or similar complex IT environments is preferred.

The regular hours for this position will be scheduled between 8:00 am to 5:00 pm, Monday through Friday. These hours may vary due to needs of the College or department.

Compensation

Budget Salary Range: $33.65 - $40.87

This position is generally sedentary and requires the ability to sit for prolonged periods of time and operate a computer for extended durations.
