We are seeking an experienced Senior Mechanical Design Engineer with a strong background in machinery design for special purpose mechanical equipment, mechanical handling systems, and fabrication projects. The role will be based on a hybrid working arrangement between our Knowsley and Warrington offices. This is an excellent opportunity to contribute to challenging, high-profile projects in the nuclear sector, with a particular focus on equipment for decommissioning environments.
Key Responsibilities
- Lead the design and development of bespoke mechanical machinery and handling systems, from concept through to manufacture.
- Produce detailed 3D models and manufacturing drawings using CAD and SolidWorks software.
- Prepare and review design calculations, technical specifications, and engineering reports.
- Ensure designs meet relevant nuclear industry standards, regulatory requirements, and client specifications.
- Collaborate with multidisciplinary teams, including project managers, structural engineers, and fabrication teams.
- Oversee supplier engagement, manufacturing support, and site-based engineering activities as required.
- Support design reviews, hazard assessments, and project documentation in line with nuclear site protocols.
Key Experience & Skills
- Proven track record in special purpose machinery design and mechanical handling equipment.
- Strong fabrication and manufacturing knowledge.
- Nuclear industry experience – essential.
- Experience in nuclear decommissioning projects – highly desirable.
- Proficiency in CAD and SolidWorks.
- Ability to lead projects, mentor junior engineers, and liaise confidently with clients.
Qualifications
- Degree in Mechanical Engineering or equivalent (HNC, ONC, or similar considered with relevant experience).
- Strong knowledge of engineering standards, safety regulations, and quality assurance processes within the nuclear sector.
