An exciting opportunity has arisen for an experienced and commercially driven Senior Quantity Surveyor to join a successful and expanding civil engineering contractor delivering a diverse portfolio of projects throughout the Northeast. Based out of the company's Durham office, you will play a key role in the commercial delivery of projects ranging in value from £5 million to £30 million. Working closely with operational teams and clients, you will be responsible for managing a varied portfolio of schemes across housing developments, infrastructure, industrial developments, roads and highways, earthworks, and groundworks. This role offers exposure to a mixture of bespoke and NEC contracts, providing an excellent opportunity to further develop your commercial expertise across a broad range of civil engineering projects.
The Role
Reporting to the Commercial Manager, you will take responsibility for the commercial management of projects from pre-construction through to final account, ensuring commercial performance is maximised while maintaining strong client and stakeholder relationships. You will oversee multiple projects across the Northeast, supporting delivery teams and ensuring robust commercial controls are maintained throughout the project lifecycle.
Key Responsibilities
- Managing all commercial aspects of civil engineering projects valued between £5m and £30m.
- Preparing, administering, and negotiating subcontract agreements.
- Managing project budgets, cost reporting, forecasting, and cash flow.
- Preparing and submitting valuations and applications for payment.
- Managing variations, compensation events, and change control processes.
- Producing and agreeing final accounts.
- Identifying commercial risks and opportunities across projects.
- Ensuring compliance with contractual obligations and protecting commercial interests.
- Supporting procurement activities and subcontractor management.
- Providing commercial support and guidance to operational teams.
- Mentoring and developing junior commercial staff where appropriate.

Projects typically include:
- Residential and housing infrastructure developments.
- Industrial and commercial developments.
- Roads and highways schemes.
- Earthworks and bulk excavation packages.

About You
You will have:
- Proven experience as a Quantity Surveyor or Senior Quantity Surveyor within the civil engineering, infrastructure, groundworks, or highways sectors.
- Strong working knowledge of NEC contracts and commercial management processes.
- Experience managing projects of significant value and complexity; excellent commercial awareness and financial acumen.
- Strong negotiation and stakeholder management skills. Ability to identify and mitigate commercial risks while maximising project profitability.
- Degree qualification in Quantity Surveying or a related discipline.
- Professional membership with RICS, CIOB, ICES, or equivalent would be advantageous.
