Hours of Work: Over 7 days, 8am – 4.30pm with 30 min unpaid lunch, includes rota of lates and weekends. Working week averages 37 hours, including one in three weekends and some evenings.
Role Overview: As the Site Ranger on Coulsdon Common you will be responsible for looking after ancient woodland, neutral, acid and chalk grasslands, woodpasture and ponds. You will supervise contractors and volunteers delivering projects to conserve important features, maintain facilities, and provide public open‑space services. You will be part of the ranger team responsible for West Wickham & Coulsdon Commons, six open spaces including a National Nature Reserve, SSSIs, species‑rich chalk grassland, veteran oak pollards, heathland, and ancient monuments.
Key Responsibilities:
- Deliver annual work programmes and manage projects.
- Use tools, machinery, and care for livestock.
- Ensure safe working practice and work with children and young people.
- Lead guided walks and make presentations.
- Supervise contractors and volunteers.
Qualifications and Experience:
- Minimum Diploma or NVQ Level 2 in a land management discipline.
- Full driving licence.
- Proven experience of practical countryside management, supervising projects, and working effectively in teams and independently.
