Learning Support Specialist
42 weeks Term Time Only
35 hours per week

To contribute to achieving excellence in supporting students through innovative and excellent practice. You will be expected to assess and support students of all ages with Special Educational Needs Difficulties and/or Disabilities (SEND).

The purpose of support is to remove barriers to learning and access, improving participation and achievements, fostering confidence and independence among students.

You will be expected to produce comprehensive Individual Teaching Plans which will guide teachers and support staff in meeting the needs of individual learners both in and out of class. The role involves meeting with students and parents/guardians on a one-to-one basis, to discuss the support required to enable them to maximise their learning potential.

Responsible to: Head of Additional Learning Support

Key Responsibilities

  1. To contribute fully to the mission and values statement of the College ensuring its effective implementation in all aspects of college life.
  2. To contribute to the College and Department's strategic objectives and to actively engage in departmental policies, processes and procedures.
  3. To be aware of developments in SEND and update knowledge and skills on an annual basis.
  4. To have a good knowledge and understanding of the barriers faced by Post-16 learners, and the strategies and resources available to support them.
  5. Establish and maintain professional relationships with students which promote and maintain appropriate behaviour, communication and respect for others.
  6. Create Individual Teaching Plans, record information appropriately and accurately on college systems and maintain confidentiality in line with college expectations.
  7. To liaise effectively and appropriately with external agencies as and when required.
  8. To liaise with Learning Support Practitioners, Teachers, Progress Leaders and other staff to advise, guide and inform of learners' support needs and strategies recommended to support them.
  9. Work closely and collaboratively with Specialist Tutors and Assessors to ensure learners have the opportunity for assessment of any exam access arrangements if required

  2. To take proactive responsibility for Health & Safety to ensure that a safe working environment and safe working practices are maintained at all times.
  3. To comply with the General Data Protection Regulations (GDPR).
  4. To support cross college activities as required, in particular the key enrolment and invigilation periods.
  5. Carry out any other relevant and appropriate duties as determined by the needs of the service and as appropriate to the grade.
