Job Title: Engineering Technician

Department: Engineering and Green Technologies

Location: Liverpool

Salary: £27,598 – £29,911 per year

Job Type: Permanent, 35 hours

Description: To provide technical support to staff and students in the Engineering, Green Technologies and Logistics School at The City of Liverpool College, Vauxhall Road Centre. The department has a range of engineering equipment used by staff and students in the delivery of courses from entry level to HND (Level 5). There are 2 labs equipped with FESTO equipment to support higher level courses, offering practical work in programming, pneumatics and hydraulics. Reports to: Head of School.

Key Responsibilities

  • Provide technical support for staff and students in the delivery of practical sessions
  • Supervise workshop space including tools and equipment; prepare plans and schedules for planned activities
  • Coordinate with the School manager to maintain an inventory list and maximise the effectiveness of specialist resources
  • Collaborate with Technician staff and lecturers to monitor facility and resource upgrades and keep equipment current to industry standards (where finance permits)
  • Utilise specialist knowledge to carry out a range of tasks to support a professional service
  • Provide general support for teaching in the area
  • Set up and operate equipment to an agreed service level
  • Demonstrate equipment to staff/students and instruct on safe use of equipment and techniques
  • Support the design of equipment/workshop layout
  • Carry out maintenance tasks including testing to ensure equipment remains in good condition (may include licence-requiring equipment)
  • Establish systems for accurate maintenance records
  • Transport goods and equipment around the faculty
  • Train staff in specific areas of expertise and knowledge
  • Assist with training of other staff in particular areas of expertise
  • Undertake risk assessments to ensure risks are understood, mitigated, managed and recorded per college policy
  • Comply with health and safety guidelines, instructions and regulations
  • Assist with budget and resource management
  • Monitor stocks and consumables and order replacements per college financial regulations
  • Handle cash/cash equivalents where identified as necessary
  • Comply with security, stock control, cash handling procedures, standards and audit requirements
  • Comply with financial regulations within own area of work
  • Maintain high levels of customer service and promote a positive image of the College
  • Resolve problems, diagnose faults, respond to complaints and refer to appropriate person when needed
  • Comply with set quality standards and procedural instructions
  • Attend/arrange meetings as requested and support work activities
  • Support the college objectives, values and aims through good working practices
  • Carry out other relevant duties within the framework of the post as needed at a suitable location
  • Make full use of new technology in all aspects of job requirements
  • Attend and participate in section meetings and development groups
  • Participate in staff development and practice, including in-service training and college appraisal

Skills, Knowledge and Expertise

Essential Criteria

  • NVQ 3 in Motor Vehicle or relevant industry experience
  • Significant experience in a Motor Vehicle related position (preferably 10 years)
  • Specialist knowledge of Vehicle Diagnostics and equipment
  • Experience with a wide range of workshop equipment, portable power tools and hand tools safely
  • Experience of heavy lifting and working at height
  • Experience coordinating a technical team to support performance
  • Ability to work as a team member and independently
  • Strong customer focus and communication skills
  • Good practical skills and ability to demonstrate to others
  • Commitment to Continuous Professional Development
  • Desirable: Experience in Portable Appliance Testing (PAT)
  • Maintenance knowledge in domestic, commercial and industrial applications
  • Current driving license
  • Health and Safety certification (IOSH or NEBOSH)
