Overview

Outdoor Education Instructor, Lagganlia Centre for Outdoor Learning (Children, Education and Justice Services). Salary: £20.34 per hour. Hours: Casual contract. Lagganlia is looking to add up to three new staff to its Freelance (Casual Contract) Outdoor Education Instructor Team.

The Lagganlia Centre for Outdoor Learning is part of the City of Edinburgh\’s Outdoor Learning Team, with two residential centres, a city-based resource centre, a technical advice service and an inner city facility called the Risk Factory. Located close to Aviemore in the Cairngorms National Park, Lagganlia reopened post-Covid as a fully refurbished, high-quality residential outdoor learning centre. Our primary role is to provide outdoor learning residentials for the young people of Edinburgh.

Responsibilities

  • Provide a wide range of adventurous outdoor learning experiences (e.g., skiing/snowboarding, sailing, canoeing, mountaineering, rafting, climbing, kayaking, canyoning and mountain biking). Onsite facilities include archery, orienteering, skiing and high ropes.
  • Design and deliver programmes tailored to visiting schools; instructors have ownership to design their own programme.
  • Work with and apply the Scotland Curriculum for Excellence; ensure deliverable outcomes are written weekly by the visiting school and adapt activities to achieve these outcomes.
  • Collaborate with the existing team to meet demand for residential weeks, with variability in the number of weeks available due to the in-house permanent staff team.

Requirements / Qualifications

  • This post is regulated work with children and/or protected adults under the Protection of Vulnerable Groups (Scotland) Act 2007. The preferred candidate will be required to join the PVG Scheme or undergo a PVG Scheme update check.
  • Where an individual has spent a continuous period of 3 months or more outside the UK in the last 5 years, an Overseas Criminal Record Check will be required.
  • An unconditional offer of employment is subject to satisfactory pre-employment checks (PVG and Overseas Check).
  • Excellent understanding and experience of delivering the Curriculum for Excellence; staff must be able to adapt programmes to deliver the required outcomes.
