Gilmerton Primary School and The Spinney Lane Nursery School are seeking to recruit a Depute Headteacher with proven experience in driving forward curriculum innovation. The school is a non-denominational primary school serving the community of Southeast Edinburgh, opened on its present site in 1968. It comprises eighteen classes from P1 to P7 (rising to 19 classes during session 2025/2026) and the current school role is 515. The leadership team includes a Head Teacher, two Depute Head Teachers, two Principal Teachers and a Business Manager, and also oversees the management of the Spinney Lane Nursery. The role requires working in partnership with parents, carers and other agencies for the benefit of all learners.

Responsibilities and Qualifications

  • Have experience across Early Years, First and Second Level and a commitment to innovative, research-led approaches.
  • Be able to support pupils and staff in developing creative approaches towards improving attainment and curriculum design.
  • Be a highly skilled practitioner who is able to support, advise and collaborate with colleagues and partner services.
  • Have experience of leading a team.
  • Have a good working knowledge of GIRFEC and experience of leading transitions.
  • Have excellent communication and organisational skills.

This post is regulated work with children and/or protected adults under the Protection of Vulnerable Groups (Scotland) Act 2007. The preferred candidate will be required to join the PVG Scheme or undergo a PVG Scheme update check. Where an individual has spent a continuous period of 3 months or more out of the UK in the last 5 years, an Overseas Criminal Record Check will be required. The offer of employment and commencement in the post will be subject to the outcome of both pre-employment checks being deemed satisfactory.
