Flexible Cleaning Operative
Position: Flexible Cleaning Operative – fixed term until 29/05/2026.
Location: Balerno Community High School, Balerno, Scotland.
Salary: £25 322 – £25 623 (pro‑rata for part‑time).
Hours: 15 per week, 52 weeks a year (Monday‑Friday 4 pm‑7 pm).
About the role
As a cleaner with the City of Edinburgh Council, you will be a key member of our Facilities Management team. Your work will deliver vital cleaning services across our estate to ensure our properties are safe and clean places to work or learn. Secure and flexible employment is offered at above‑market rates with excellent conditions, while allowing you to balance family, caring or studying commitments.
Key responsibilities
- Empty litter and recycling bins.
- Clean all surfaces, internal glass, floors, furniture, fixtures and fittings within the buildings.
- Maintain sanitary areas, toilets and showers and replenish washroom consumables.
- Provide emergency and reactive cleaning as required (e.g., removal of graffiti, body‑fluid spillages, accidental spillages).
- Maintain the care and cleanliness of all equipment used.
- Support cleaning tasks in other buildings when required.
- Deliver to the cleaning specification requirements and cooperate with performance measurement to meet overall agreed standards.
- As a key holder, operate security alarm systems, close accessible windows and doors, switch off lights and ensure premises are left safe and secure.
Key requirements
- Regulated work with children and/or protected adults under the Protection of Vulnerable Groups (Scotland) Act 2007.
- Required to join the PVG Scheme or undergo a PVG Scheme update check.
- Overseas Criminal Record Check required if spent 3 months or more outside the UK in the last 5 years.
- Unconditional offer of employment contingent on satisfactory completion of these pre‑employment checks.
