The Public Affairs Division of the Europe North Area is responsible for managing the Church’s government relations, media relations, interfaith work and reputation management. Through these efforts, the Division builds understanding, strengthens relationships, supports the Church’s mission, and contributes to God’s work of salvation and exaltation.
The central work of the Government Relations and Policy Lead is to develop and deliver government relations and public policy engagement for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints across the Area.
The role involves building and maintaining relationships with government ministers, parliamentarians, and political and civic stakeholders, while helping Church leaders understand and respond to relevant political and policy developments.
The Government Relations and Policy Lead will report to the Area Public Affairs Manager.
The role will have a primary functional focus on government relations and public policy. As part of the Area Public Affairs team, the post-holder will also be assigned responsibility for country portfolios and strategic projects. These assignments may change over time in response to Area priorities and workload.
Please note that this is a remote position and can be based in any of the following countries: United Kingdom, Ireland, Denmark, Norway, Finland, Sweden, Latvia, Lithuania, Estonia, Cape Verde, or Portugal.
Responsibilities
• Develop and maintain government relations strategies for priority countries and issues across the Europe North Area, ensuring that engagement is proactive, coordinated and aligned with Area priorities.
• Train and support volunteer National Communication Directors and local Church leaders in developing and maintaining appropriate stakeholder relationships, ensuring effective local ownership and continuity.
• Build and maintain effective relationships with government ministers, parliamentarians, government officials, political advisers, public institutions and relevant stakeholders.
• Maintain a working knowledge of the political, policy and stakeholder environment across the Europe North Area, while taking primary or secondary ownership of designated country portfolios and strategic projects.
• Monitor political, legislative and policy developments relevant to the Church’s mission, values, programmes and ability to operate. Provide concise analysis, recommendations and horizon scanning updates to Church leadership.
• Support government engagement connected to significant Area initiatives, including the preparation of stakeholder plans and briefing materials.
• Support the planning and delivery of government facing events, roundtables, parliamentary meetings, receptions, visits and senior delegations.
• Maintain accurate stakeholder records, engagement plans and meeting outcomes in CRM and reporting systems.
• Contribute to wider Area Public Affairs activities, including interfaith engagement, reputation management, media response and other projects when government or policy support is required.
• Serve as a point of contact for some national or coordination council communication councils
Qualifications
• University degree, or equivalent professional experience, in politics, public policy, international relations, government, public relations or a related field.
• A minimum of four years’ experience, preferably in government relations, public affairs, politics, policy, PR, parliamentary work, diplomacy or a related field.
• Strong understanding of the political landscape, with the ability to interpret political and policy developments across different jurisdictions.
• Excellent written, spoken and interpersonal communication skills, with the ability to produce clear briefings, analysis and recommendations for senior leadership.
• Advanced level English skills, fluency in a second European language a strong advantage.
• Ability to manage several workstreams simultaneously, meet deadlines and coordinate colleagues, volunteers, advisers and external partners.
• Ability to work sensitively and professionally on issues involving religion, belief, religious freedom, politics, reputation and public policy.
• Willingness to travel within the Europe North Area when required.
