Church planting and revitalisation are central to Church of England Birmingham's vision for sustained missional growth, new disciples and the renewal of local churches. We are seeking an experienced mission leader who can help establish new worshipping communities, revitalise existing churches and enable sustainable growth so that more people encounter, follow and grow in Jesus Christ. The Head of Church Planting & Revitalisation will provide strategic leadership for church planting and revitalisation across Church of England Birmingham.
Building on a growing track record of innovation, learning and national credibility in this area, the postholder will help shape the next phase of church planting, revitalisation partnerships, leadership development and new worshipping communities across a wide range of contexts and traditions. This is a role for an experienced practitioner and strategist with a proven track record of enabling church growth through church planting and revitalisation. The successful candidate will be able to demonstrate their direct leadership in establishing a fruitful church plant, leading a successful revitalisation, or enabling significant growth through a comparable mission initiative.
Reporting to the Director of Mission and working closely with the Head of Parish Growth and Head of Growing Younger, the postholder will help shape and deliver a joined-up approach to mission, discipleship and church growth across Church of England Birmingham.

Church planting and revitalisation form a central part of this vision and have received strong support from the bishops, senior leadership and local churches across Church of England Birmingham. This work is supported by significant national investment, including a £5.7 million award from the National Church. The Mission Support Team is structured around three interconnected areas of focus: Parish Growth, Church Planting & Revitalisation, and Growing Younger.
The role will foster a missional culture that reflects all five marks of Mission with particular emphasis on the first two: To proclaim the good news of the Kingdom, To teach, baptise and nurture new believers, and with a deep understanding of how these Marks of Mission are interwoven with those of loving service, justice, and care for creation.
Key Responsibilities- Provide strategic leadership for church planting and revitalisation across Church of England Birmingham.
- Establish and support Project Steering Groups for agreed church plants and revitalisations.
- Accompany clergy and lay leaders through the discernment, design and implementation of church plants and revitalisations.
- Translate strategic priorities into clear Mission Designs.
- Lead Church of England Birmingham's engagement with the CCX Plant Course.
- Develop and support current and future church planting and revitalisation leaders.
- Engage with relevant national and regional learning networks.
- Work collaboratively with the Head of Parish Growth and Head of Growing Younger.
- Play a full part in the prayer life of the Mission Support Team.
- There is a genuine occupational requirement that post-holder be a practising Christian.
- Demonstrable track record of enabling church growth through church planting, revitalisation or comparable mission initiatives.
- Evidence of direct leadership in establishing a fruitful church plant, leading a successful revitalisation, or enabling significant growth through a comparable mission initiative.
- Ability to articulate and implement a compelling vision for church planting and revitalisation.
- Experience of coaching and developing leaders.
- Sufficient understanding of Church of England parish life and structures.
- Experience of leading multiple church plants, revitalisations or new worshipping communities.
- Experience of leading or facilitating recognised church planting training programmes such as the CCX Plant Course.
- Experience of managing staff team colleagues and volunteers.
- Relevant theological qualification or equivalent experience.
- Salary of £42,230 plus membership of the Church Workers Pension Scheme with 12% employer contribution.
- Fixed‑term appointment for five years.
- Full‑time, 35 hours per week.
- 5 weeks plus Bank Holidays and 3 discretionary days.
- Responsible To: Director of Mission.
