We are a 25 bedded ward comprised of open bays and side rooms. We care for a variety of disease groups and provide exposure, broadening knowledge and expertise within the field of oncology. We treat patients with a full range of diagnostic, inpatient, and treatment needs. We specialise in Altered Airways, administer chemotherapy regimens, and support patients during treatment with symptoms and side effects. We care for palliative patients, providing symptom control and end-of-life care. The Christie is one of Europe’s leading cancer centres, based in Manchester, serving a population of 3.2 million across Greater Manchester & Cheshire, with national referrals. We provide radiotherapy, on-site chemotherapy, highly specialist surgery, extensive support and diagnostic services, and host one of the largest early clinical trial units in Europe.

On Ward 4 we are looking for a caring, compassionate and motivated individual to join our team. Ward 4 is an acute medical Oncology ward specialising in caring for patients with Altered Airways, within a leading cancer centre. Job Purpose

The Ward Housekeeper will undertake a range of duties associated with keeping the unit environment clean and well maintained. You will work as part of a team and in conjunction with the Domestic staff. As part of the unit team, the Housekeeper will enhance the delivery of patient care by nursing staff and carers, and may be asked to assist in other areas as required by the service.

Responsibilities

  • Report maintenance needs within the ward, order stock, and keep the ward clean, tidy and well organised in line with infection control policy and procedure.
  • Work as part of a team and in conjunction with the Domestic staff.
  • Be available to assist in other areas as required by the service.
  • Undertake cleaning duties in accordance with ward schedules and procedures.
  • Conduct weekly cleaning of ward/unit equipment and environment per disinfection/cleaning policy.
  • Monitor daily standard of cleanliness on the ward/Unit and liaise with Domestic service and Ward/Unit Manager.
  • Assist with patient meals, beverages, and water during stay, following dietary requirements (e.g., Nil by mouth) as directed by the Ward Coordinator.
  • Offer refreshments to patients at regular times and assist with mealtimes, maintain kitchen cleanliness, stock meal trays, and dispose of waste.
  • Check waiting areas pre- and post-clinic for cleanliness and tidiness; clean waiting area chairs as required.
  • Check and record fridge temperatures daily and ensure kitchen stock rotation for dry goods and provisions.
  • Keep the nurses’ office tidy and free from clutter; assist and direct patients/visitors when appropriate.
  • Assist with movement and escort of patients under the direction of the nurse in charge; answer telephone with location, name and title.
  • Ensure emails are read regularly and acted upon as required.
  • Maintain adequate linen levels; assist staff in keeping the patient bed area clean and tidy; dispose of linen per policy.
  • Ensure barrier and vacated rooms are cleaned according to policy; ensure hand-washing equipment and sanitizers are available in designated areas.
  • Ensure medical devices are cleaned and report problems; maintain a high standard of fixtures and fittings; escalate concerns and complete relevant documentation.
  • Maintain awareness of ward/Unit environment and safety aspects (e.g., call bells, fire exits, alarms).
  • Adhere to the Trust’s Equal Opportunities Policy and Health and Safety at Work policies; undertake other duties as required by management.

Qualifications and Requirements

Excellent communication skills; IT literate; able to work flexibly as part of a team; committed to high standards of work. Training will be provided to enable the Housekeeper to undertake all duties. All staff must maintain confidentiality of Trust and patient information and report concerns to the Ward Manager.
