Job overview This post is for 5 Programmed Activities (PAs) per week to provide specialist urological surgical oncology services at The Christie Hospital. This is primarily to further develop the world class prostate cancer service. The successful candidate will specialise in prostate cancer management, providing specialist expertise to the Greater Manchester catchment area. The right candidate will need to bring additional expertise to complement the current Team members. An interest or experience in minimally invasive and innovative technologies will be a necessity. Alongside this a proven track record in research will be important.

Prostate cancer management is evolving rapidly. Advances in imaging, genomics, artificial intelligence, radiotherapy, systemic therapies and personalised medicine are creating new opportunities to transform patient care. The successful candidate will work closely with clinicians, scientists, researchers, engineers, industry partners, data specialists and patients. Strong communication skills and the ability to collaborate across disciplines will be essential.
This role is ideal for someone with academic ambition who wishes to develop research ideas, contribute to clinical trials and support work that influences future practice. The successful candidate will be able to think beyond individual clinics and consider how innovation can improve outcomes for patients nationally and internationally.
Working for our organisation The postholder will contribute to the delivery of high quality consultant led care across 7 days. This includes participation in planned weekend and weekday clinical activity to support safe, timely decision making and continuity of care for patients.
The service is a national referral service with three MDTs each week where all new referrals are discussed. The service is consultant led with daily consultant ward rounds undertaken in rotation. A system is in place with job planned consultant Colorectal, Urology, and Gynaecology support for operating lists to facilitate the complex nature of the surgery. Quarterly Morbidity and Mortality meetings are undertaken to review all complications. The service prides itself in its low complication figures for the major surgeries undertaken. We are an ESSO accredited training centre for peritoneal surface malignancy. We provide mentorship for trainees undertaking the ESSO/EPSO fellowship in peritoneal surgery. Emergency cover is provided by the colorectal on-call consultant which the successful appointment will be part of. This covers inpatient surgical and oncology patients including those presenting through the Acute Oncology Assessment Unit.
Detailed job description and main responsibilities DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
The medical establishment provides the following staff within the urology department:
Ten Consultant urologists (2 on SLA contracts with The Christie NHS Foundation Trust from Northern Care Alliance and Manchester NHS Foundation Trust)
Seven Uro-Oncology specialist nurses and one ANP
Five Middle grades (2 Specialist trainees, 3 Clinical/Research Fellows plus visiting International Fellows)
Five Secretaries
The appointee will be based at The Christie NHS Foundation Trust in Withington, Manchester, although he/she may be required to provide an outreach clinic at other partner sites within the Greater Manchester area. consultant will also provide senior input to the management of patients with prostate cancer.
Continuing Professional Development (CPD)
The Trust supports the requirements for CPD as laid down by the GMC and royal colleges and is committed to providing time and financial support for these activities.
Job Planning
The job plan outlines the requirements of the post and may be altered by joint agreement with the Divisional Clinical Director and Service Manager and in response to service needs. Job Plans are prospectively agreed subject to an annual individual job plan review (May – September). It is expected that the initial Job Plan discussion will take place within the first six months of employment at the Trust and then be aligned to the Trusts annual Job Planning review cycle.
The annual review will examine all aspects of the job plan (including any educational and supervision components) and will also include an assessment of professional development with defined goals for the future. The consultant job plan will include a combination of Direct Clinical Care (DCC) and Supporting Professional Activities (SPA) delivered across the 7‑day week.
Weekend working will consist of programmed clinical activities that are job‑planned, scheduled in advance, and reviewed annually through the job planning process.
