We are hiring for an AI Policy Manager / Senior AI Policy Manager.

Salary: £65,388 to £93,723 depending on skill set and experience, plus a generous benefits package.

Location: Flexible location within the UK, with the expectation of attending our central London office at least two days a week, including Mondays.

AI Policy at CLTR

Our AI Policy unit works to develop and advocate for policy recommendations which could mitigate extreme risks from AI development and deployment. We work primarily with the UK government, with an eye to how the UK can influence international norms, best practices, and regulations.

The extreme risks from AI we focus on include:

  • Risks arising from the deployment of AI in high‑stakes contexts, such as defence or critical infrastructure;
  • Risks arising from the misuse of AI capabilities, such as to manipulate elections or develop novel weapons;
  • Risks arising from the development of certain advanced AI capabilities, such as deceptive or power‑seeking behaviour.

Some of our recent work includes:

  • Convening workshops with the Department for Science, Innovation and Technology (DSIT) and civil society on the impacts of geopolitical changes on UK’s approach to AI legislation.
  • Providing proposals for improving preparedness for advanced AI and AGI to the AI Security Institute (AISI).
  • Advocating for frontier AI regulation in a roundtable with the DSIT Secretary of State.

This hire will significantly increase our capacity to develop and advocate for policy in this space. Over the next few years, we hope to grow a team of AI policy specialists, and this hire will have the opportunity to help shape the development of that team.

What you’ll do

We are seeking a dedicated individual to become a core member of our AI Policy Unit. Your role could evolve in the future to become focused on a particular area, such as government advocacy or specialising in a particular area of AI policy. Depending on funding and candidate strength, we may hire two people at this stage. Working as a team member and under the support and guidance of the Head of AI Policy, your role would include:

  • AI policy development (approximately 60% of the role):
    • Identifying high impact policy areas within the AI unit’s strategic priorities that require further policy development and/or advocacy;
    • Scoping short term projects to develop robust and evidence‑based policy recommendations within those policy areas, and advocate for them effectively;
    • Informing your work and the wider unit’s understanding by employing a range of research methods, including interviewing experts, hosting workshops, conducting literature reviews and summarising research;
    • Representing CLTR at AI conferences, meetings and other public and private events.
  • Government engagement (approximately 25% of the role):
    • Building new relationships with government stakeholders, including planning, attending and leading meetings with government officials;
    • Delivering research or policy analysis in response to high‑value requests from government stakeholders, where and when these align with our strategic priorities;
    • Evaluating government plans and strategies relevant to our AI priority workstreams, suggesting areas for improvement and methods to support;
    • Assisting with maintaining our relationships with current government stakeholders while actively strengthening our network, including by learning how CLTR can be most helpful;
    • Connecting government stakeholders to leading subject matter experts;
    • Promoting our policy recommendations to government audiences through private and public engagement and coordination, sometimes including media outreach.
  • CLTR teamwork (approximately 15% of the role):
    • Working with the broader CLTR team to further the organisation’s mission;
    • Contributing to the development and creation of organisation‑wide policy frameworks;
    • Participating in comprehensive stakeholder analysis with the broader team;
    • Actively contributing to strategic plans, organisational development, and regular team meetings;
    • Providing constructive feedback to colleagues and reciprocating with support for team inputs;
    • Collaborating on cross‑unit projects, uniting our policy areas and workstreams under the CLTR mission.

What you’ll bring

The CLTR AI Policy Unit is looking for candidates with ability to develop impactful and pragmatic policy recommendations to reduce extreme risks from AI, combined with an aptitude for building and maintaining strong relationships with relevant stakeholders.   • Strong motivation to reduce extreme AI risks and alignment with CLTR’s mission;
  • Experience in research, policy, or advocacy in AI or a closely related field, with a strong understanding of the AI landscape and ideally some understanding of the UK government;
  • The ability to independently develop new, high value relationships with key stakeholders, including government officials, Parliamentarians, and civil society;
  • The ability to thrive within a small team frequently operating in uncertainty, responding to a changing context, and frequently pivoting to the highest impact opportunities;
  • The ability to scope and execute policy development projects, balancing deep thinking with a track record of independently executing high quality research with excellent written communication;
  • The ability to think clearly and independently about extreme AI risks, and the role of government and other actors in mitigating those risks;
  • Ideally, experience or expertise in one or more of our current focus areas: regulation of frontier AI, incident preparedness and response, preparedness for the impacts of AGI (including forecasting and societal resilience), or national security and military risks from AI.

Salary and benefits

£65,388 to £93,723 depending on experience. However, we would be open to considering a slightly higher salary for a truly exceptional candidate. In addition to your salary, CLTR offers a generous benefits package which includes:

  • 28 days annual leave, plus public holidays;
  • £5,000 (before tax) annual wellbeing budget, for you to spend at your discretion on items such as gym membership, therapy, meditation, etc;
  • £3,000 annual learning and development budget, plus up to five days paid work time;

Location and travel requirements

Flexible location within the UK, with the expectation of attending our central London office at least twice a week, including Mondays.
