Location: The Centre for Computing History, Cambridge, Coldham’s Lane, CB1 3EW
Permanent contract (subject to passing three month probation)
Working Pattern: Full time, 5 days per week: Weds – Sun or Sat – Weds during school summer holidays, requires flexibility. 09:20 – 17:20 with 30 minutes lunch break

About Us
The Centre for Computing History is a vibrant and engaging museum dedicated to preserving the history of computing. Our museum allows visitors to explore how we went from a few computers the size of a room, to everyone having one in their pockets - in just 80 years! We offer hands-on exhibits, educational workshops, and special events for all ages. We are now seeking an enthusiastic and digitally savvy individual to join our team as a Front of House and Social Media Assistant.
Role Overview
This dual role is ideal for someone who is personable, reliable, and has a flair for digital communication. As part of the Front of House (FoH) team, you’ll be the first face our visitors see and support daily visitor operations. You’ll also be an online ambassador for the museum, and will be supported to follow our Social Media Strategy to develop regular social media posts.
This role requires flexibility in working hours and includes regular weekend and school holiday work. During school summer holidays, when the museum opens seven days a week, your working days will shift to Sat – Weds, with Thurs and Fri off. Outside of this, your usual pattern will be Weds - Sun, with Mon and Tues off.
Key Responsibilities
Front of House (FOH)
- Greet and welcome visitors, delivering excellent customer service
- Process admission and shop sales using our till system
- Respond to visitor enquiries in person, by phone, and email
- Keep reception and shop areas tidy and welcoming
- Support the shop, Pac Lunch Café, group visits, and public events
- Pack and post online shop orders
- Create occasional signage and display materials
Social Media & Digital
- Create engaging posts (images, reels, stories) across platforms such as Instagram, Facebook, X/Twitter and LinkedIn
- Follow our Social Media Strategy and calendar to plan posts
- Use Hootsuite or similar to schedule content and keep platforms active
- Respond to DMs, comments, and tags in a friendly and timely manner
- Help promote our events, exhibitions and special campaigns
- Track key stats (reach, likes, shares) and support basic reporting
Person Specification
- Able to work weekends and school holidays as part of a regular shift pattern
- Friendly and approachable with strong customer service skills
- Confident using Instagram, Facebook, and other social media platforms
- Excellent written communication skills and attention to detail
- Ability to work independently and as part of a small team
- Reliable, punctual, and organised
- Interest in computing, gaming, or digital heritage
- Must be located in commutable distance to Cambridge
- Experience working in a museum, visitor attraction, or retail environment
- Basic photography and video editing skills
- Familiarity with Canva, Hootsuite, or similar tools
