# RETAIL MANAGER – WHITTONby | Oct 7, 2025The Cavan Bakery was founded by David Cavan in 1929. Today the business employs over 130 colleagues, extends to a growing number of 10+ bakery shops, a café and serves over 100 wholesale customers. Throughout this time, quality, taste, pride and passion have ensured our longevity and we believe we are as relevant in the 2020s as we were in the 1920s.Here at Cavan Bakery, we have a very keen eye on the future – developing and innovating new products, opening more shops, selling through our wholesale partners and taking our offerings online. We are seeking a passionate and experienced Retail Manager who will be responsible for ensuring quality customer service and the success of our shops.Candidates must possess the communication, organisational, leadership and motivational skills that this role demands.**KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:**· Increase sales and number of customers· Manage efficiently the day-to-day running of shop (re: staff, time, money, waste)· Set an example to the staff**CUSTOMERS**· Customer service – be responsive and acknowledge the customer immediately, be friendly and helpful.· Put yourself in place of the customer, give them the service they wouldn’t get elsewhere.· Deal with any customer problems – appropriately and professionally. Seek advice from Your Area Manager or Head Office if necessary.**STAFF**· Train, mentor and lead your staff – *encourage, coach, delegate, and discipline* where appropriate.· Handle any staff problems – appropriately and professionally. Seek advice from the HR team or Area Manager if necessary.**MONEY**· Cashing up, banking, and general handling of cash – consistent accuracy of till.· Security – ensure money, keys and premises are secure and safe.**PRODUCTS**· Ordering goods – be aware of what products your shops sells and in what quantities so that you can ensure the correct amount is ordered.· Waste and stock control – be mindful of excessive stock. Ensure all staff use correct/same amounts of fillings in sandwiches as per our training folder.· Quality control – feedback information, both good and bad (re: appearance, colour, size, quality, taste, consistency of product from day to day) to the office.· Correct displays – work with Your Area Manager and Head Office to ensure goods are displayed to their best advantage. Use tasters as appropriate.· Rotation of stock. Ensure no stale or bad goods are sold.· Keep all goods fresh – in the kitchen, the cupboards, the fridges and the shop.**ADMIN AND PROCEDURES**· All admin and paperwork – ordering stock, sandwich fillings, shop supplies – ensure it’s all done on the correct days and accurately.· Ensure all “daily paperwork” is completed by either yourself or your team.**HYGIENE**· Ensure your shop and kitchen area is clean, tidy and hygienic.· Ensure all the cleaning jobs are done regularly – daily and deep cleans.· Follow *Safer Food Better Business* and EHO guidelines at all times and maintain all related paperwork.**COMMUNICATION**· Feedback information to your shop team and office – positive and negative.· Anticipate problems and flag up to your Area Manager and Head Office. *Don’t take any work worries home*.· Suggest ideas for new lines and promotions.**GENERAL ATTITUDE AND BEHAVIOUR**· Be responsible; conscientious; committed; cooperative; enthusiastic; cheerful; helpful; professional; and proactive.· Take initiative and use common sense.· Always think “’” re: efficiency, selling, team working, morale.The role is based on a Mon – Sat variable shift pattern where you will working 5 days a week.**All applicants must have the right to work in the UK, at point of interview, and for the tenure of employment contract.
