The Cause is an award-winning, fully independent, indoor and outdoor, multi-venue dance music institution. We are a vital part of London’s nightlife ecosystem and we pride ourselves in supporting charitable causes and championing underground dance music. Our open-door policy welcomes everyone equally, regardless of musical tastes, gender, race, class, age, sexual persuasion or kinks.
Whilst maintaining the ethos of The Cause, providing a platform for electronic artists, we also opened up to a wider portfolio of entertainment, varying from food, comedy, cabaret, live music and DJ events across multiple venues. Having secured new spaces for us to operate across London, with five venues currently in operation, we are recruiting for a variety of positions to help promote the spaces, develop and grow the team and move the business forward. This is an exciting opportunity to join an ambitious & creative team, and to make your mark on club culture in London from behind the scenes.
THE ROLE
As Assistant General Manager, you’ll work closely with the General Manager to ensure smooth daily operations and contribute to the long-term success of the venue. You’ll lead the bar team, oversee supervisors, and manage essential processes that keep the venue safe, efficient, and commercially strong. This role is hands-on and varied. From stock management to staffing, compliance to customer experience, you’ll be involved in every aspect of the operation. We’re looking for someone with strong leadership skills, a practical mindset, and the ability to stay calm and decisive in a fast-paced environment.
RESPONSIBILITIES
- Running and managing event shifts at The Cause either autonomously or with the wider management team. Shifts are a mixture of mornings/daytime/evening, with the majority of these events scheduled across Friday-Sunday.
- Support venue security and operational safety, ensuring all health & safety (H&S) compliance is up to date, reviewed regularly, and improved where necessary.
- Oversee all aspects of bar operations, maximizing efficiency and profitability while maintaining high standards through clear standard operating procedures (SOPs).
- Work closely with the bar management and venue team to optimize staffing, meet business demands, and achieve financial goals.
- Manage stock and supplies (wet/dry/merchandise), keeping levels within target percentages, minimizing waste, and ensuring accurate reporting of gross profit (GP), cost of goods sold (COGS), comps, wastage, and variance. Maintain appropriate stock levels using par values and stocktakes.
- Ensure food safety and H&S compliance for internal food traders and external food traders, staying up to date with government regulations and maintaining all necessary documentation.
- Assist with administrative duties, including staff scheduling, invoice reconciliation, stock control, and HR processes.
- Manage staff rotas, aligning staffing with demand, controlling payroll costs, and ensuring timely approval on Rotaready. Train the team to manage labor efficiently in your absence.
- Oversee staff training and development, creating structured training plans for all roles, promoting internal growth, and working closely with senior leadership and HR.
- Coordinate external suppliers (security, cleaning, toilet attendants), ensuring high service standards, addressing issues with senior management, and optimizing costs without compromising safety or quality.
SKILLS & EXPERIENCE
- At least 2 years’ senior management experience in hospitality, ideally in high-volume or event-led venues.
- High level of proficiency with admin-based computer programmes such as Google Sheets, Microsoft Excel, and Microsoft Word.
- Experience with scheduling software such as, or similar to, Deputy and Rotaready.
- Strong understanding of stock control, including gross profit (GP), stocktakes, deliveries, audits, line checks, and reconciliation.
- A leadership style that is engaging, confident, and proactive in a fast-paced, unpredictable, and constantly changing environment. Ability to oversee a team of up to 50 staff and external contractors while remaining calm under pressure.
- In-depth knowledge and understanding of alcohol service and food safety legislation.
- Ability to bring fresh ideas and provide a wider industry perspective to the business, whilst working proactively and with integrity at all times.
- Willingness to work weekends, public holidays, and late-night hours.
- Experience in incident response, including liaising with the police, licensing enforcement, and council representatives.
