The CatchUp Academy is seeking a patient, nurturing, and resilient tutor to support an 8-year-old child with significant Social, Emotional and Mental Health (SEMH) needs. This role will focus on delivering core curriculum subjects whilst prioritising emotional regulation, engagement, confidence-building, and the development of a trusting relationship.

About the Child

This young person experiences significant anxiety, hypervigilance, and difficulties regulating emotions, which impact all aspects of daily life and learning. They have a narrow window of tolerance and can become overwhelmed quickly when faced with increased demands, transitions, changes in routine, or unfamiliar situations. The child seeks reassurance from trusted adults and benefits from calm, consistent support. Early experiences have affected their sense of safety, meaning that building trust and providing predictable, nurturing interactions will be essential. They can find peer relationships challenging and may struggle with sharing, turn-taking, and maintaining positive social interactions. Low self-esteem and confidence can impact both learning and relationships.

The Role

  • Deliver engaging English, Maths, and wider core curriculum activities.
  • Build a strong, trusting relationship through consistency and patience.
  • Create a calm, predictable, and emotionally safe learning environment.
  • Use flexible and creative approaches to engage the child in learning.
  • Support emotional regulation and resilience alongside academic progress.
  • Recognise signs of anxiety and adapt expectations accordingly.
  • Celebrate small successes to help build confidence and self-esteem.
  • Work collaboratively with parents and professionals involved in the child's support.

We Are Looking For Someone Who:

  • Has experience supporting children with SEMH, trauma, attachment needs, EBSA, or additional needs.
  • Is calm, empathetic, and emotionally resilient.
  • Understands the importance of relationship-based practice.
  • Can remain consistent and reassuring during periods of dysregulation.
  • Is able to balance academic learning with emotional wellbeing.
  • Has experience working 1:1 with vulnerable children.

Essential Requirements

  • Enhanced DBS Certificate.
  • Relevant teaching, tutoring, mentoring, youth work, or SEND experience.
  • Strong behaviour and relationship-management skills.
  • Excellent communication and record-keeping skills.

This is an excellent opportunity for a tutor who understands that progress begins with trust and who can help a young person feel safe, successful, and ready to learn.
