The CatchUp Academy is seeking a nurturing, patient, and experienced tutor to support a 7-year-old child with a primary need of Speech, Language and Communication Needs (SLCN) and a diagnosis of Down's Syndrome. This role will focus on developing communication, engagement, early learning skills, independence, and social interaction through highly personalised, play-based, and structured learning opportunities.

About the Child

This young person presents with significant developmental delay and requires a highly supportive and individualised approach to learning. They have delayed expressive and receptive language skills and use Makaton as a key method of communication. The child responds best to structured adult-led activities and currently has a limited attention span when engaging independently. The child is beginning to develop awareness of others but currently prefers parallel play rather than shared play experiences. Building communication, social interaction, and engagement with others will be important aspects of the role. The child also has delayed self-care and independence skills and requires support with all aspects of personal care and daily routines. Awareness of danger is significantly limited, and therefore a high level of vigilance and supervision is essential at all times.

The Role

  • Deliver personalised learning through play, exploration, and structured activities.
  • Support the development of communication using Makaton and other visual strategies.
  • Encourage early literacy, numeracy, and life skills development.
  • Build engagement, attention, and participation in adult-led learning.
  • Support social communication and opportunities for shared interaction.
  • Promote independence through carefully planned activities and routines.
  • Use sensory and practical approaches to learning.
  • Work closely with parents and professionals to ensure consistency of approach.

We Are Looking For Someone Who:

  • Has experience supporting children with Down's Syndrome, SLCN, Autism, or complex SEND needs.
  • Has knowledge of or willingness to use Makaton.
  • Is patient, nurturing, and highly adaptable.
  • Understands child development and early learning approaches.
  • Can create engaging, play-based learning opportunities.
  • Is confident working 1:1 with children who require significant support and supervision.
  • Values relationship-building and celebrating small steps of progress.

Essential Requirements

  • Enhanced DBS Certificate.
  • Relevant teaching, SEND, tutoring, early years, or support experience.
  • Strong communication and observational skills.
  • Ability to create a safe, engaging, and structured learning environment.
  • Experience working collaboratively with families and professionals.

This is a rewarding opportunity for a tutor who is passionate about supporting children with additional needs and helping them develop communication, confidence, independence, and enjoyment of learning.
