About the business unit

The Energy unit delivers services to clients globally across several sectors including hydropower, nuclear, waste, renewable generation and transmission & distribution networks. Together we provide integrated engineering and project management services across the project lifecycle – from concept and design to construction and operations, to decommissioning or repowering and life extension. Together with our clients, we’re helping to deliver the energy transition globally.

Mott MacDonald has been actively involved in the German market through exciting initiatives such as offshore hydrogen projects, hydrogen-ready thermal assets, BESS development, and wind farm transactions. We are currently building our permanent in-country presence and this role is an important part of that initiative. By combining our international expertise with local and national insight, we are aiming to deliver high quality solutions and exceptional value to our clients and the German market.

Overview of the role

We have existing ongoing projects in Germany providing consultancy services to clients in the early stage development of energy infrastructure including permitting, environmental assessment and design. This role is key to those ongoing projects as well as winning and delivering future projects of a similar type.

Key duties include:

  • Day to day Project Management and delivery of projects with a focus on emission control approval procedures and technical advice in the areas of air pollution control and noise protection
  • Identification and processing of relevant permits such as building, emissions, environmental, water rights permits
  • Preparation for and participation in application conferences
  • Direct and regular contacts with clients to keep them updated on progress and react to their needs
  • Liaison with, and management of, engineering teams’ inputs
  • Coordinating and communicating between planners, consultants, authorities and the public

Candidate specification

Essential:

  • Degree in environmental engineering or similar field
  • Demonstrable in depth professional experience in environmental management of energy projects in Germany
  • Demonstrable in depth knowledge and experience of permitting and environmental assessment of energy projects in Germany including relating to the Federal Immission Control Act (BImSchG) and relevant EU Directives
  • Project Management experience
  • Experience of managing sub-contractors
  • Strong communication skills, customer focus
  • Business fluent German and good English skills
  • Willingness to travel

Desirable:

  • Experience or qualification in process engineering
  • Specialist in depth knowledge in air or noise pollution control or similar
  • Experience of managing junior team members
  • Experience in or knowledge of other countries’ environmental and permitting requirements
  • Experience of developing and implementing work winning strategies, including client facing roles
  • Fluent in French or Spanish
