Do you love cities? Do you enjoy a fast pace of work? Do you relish the camaraderie of a close-knit team? Are you comfortable working with data?

Our team is seeking a research-driven analyst to help us produce and publish data-rich content about the future of our cities and the global economy.

The role is likely to suit someone with 2+ years of experience in a face-to-face working environment.

Working at The Business of Cities:

The Business of Cities advises cities and companies worldwide. Our team has a small base in Central London. We operate globally and have staff and part-time associates based in Auckland, Belgrade, London and Singapore.

The Business of Cities is a workplace for people interested in a bigger picture. If we were in the business of food, we’d be a small Michelin star restaurant. We are at the cutting edge of a niche and absorbing field; we are organised as a tight-knit team; we foster an encouraging environment in which to learn; and we are motivated by the creative craft and by civic impact.

Working at The Business of Cities is therefore not like working on a Grad Scheme or for a large organisation. This means that:

  • What you compile and produce will be read by organisations around the world
  • You will have direct exposure to our whole team and global associates
  • Training is largely in-situ, ‘tools in hand’ with lots of side-by-side learning
  • There will be scope from early on to take the lead
  • Your assignments are varied and your milestones are frequent

As such the role will suit someone who:

  • Can put themselves in the shoes of other team members
  • Instinctively seeks to communicate multiple times per day
  • Is comfortable signing off on work to go straight to clients
  • Is a sponge for new insights and ways of working
  • Is ready to ask lots of questions and avoids unspoken assumptions
  • Relishes the chance to learn what really matters to cities and corporates
  • Has appetite to take responsibility for their own development
  • Shares works-in-progress and seeks guidance proactively
  • Has appetite to get involved in several parts of the organisation over time

Key Responsibilities:

In this varied role, in the first 12 months you will:

  • Collect, analyse, and visualise data on cities and economies
  • Access & collect data from dozens of different sources
  • Keep data organised and accessible
  • Keep track of multiple projects’ data repositories
  • Turn data into visual content (using templates and online tools)
  • Help coordinate project progress
  • Iterate continually with a small delivery team
  • Ensure due diligence and alignment on whole-team tasks
  • Be vigilant on tracking your and others’ progress

A successful candidate will:

  • Have an undergraduate or graduate degree in a relevant field. (Degree disciplines that have successfully performed similar roles previously include Economics, Modern Languages, Political Science, Land Economy, Geography and Law, but this role is not exclusively open to such disciplines)
  • Know on Day 1 how to surf across different document formats
  • Be genuinely interested in the end-to-end journey of getting our work into the world
  • Always stay curious

What We Offer:

  • Flexible pay structures, hours & location – usually from 60% to 100% full-time-equivalent (FTE)
  • Personalised career development and feedback
  • Opportunity to become expert
  • Occasional opportunities to travel internationally
  • Competitive annual leave allocation
  • Potential to benefit from longer-term growth of a great business

To Apply:

  • Review these slides to get an idea of the kinds workflows you’ll be expected to master
  • Send an email with your CV to ezra@thebusinessofcities.com
  • Please include in the body of your email max 1-2 sentences about you and what you would bring to our team beyond what we see in your CV
  • Candidates selected for the next stage will be contacted within 7 days of application, and asked to complete a scenario exercise.
  • We do our best but cannot promise to respond to every application. If you have not received an affirmative response from our team within 7 days of submission, we have decided not to proceed with your application.
  • Thank you for your interest in working with us at The Business of Cities!
