Position: House Manager Working Hours: Monday to Friday, 9:00 am – 5:00 pm or 8:00 am – 4:00 pm Reports To: Principal Overview An exciting opportunity has arisen for an experienced and capable House Manager to oversee the daily operations of a stunning historic manor house in Oxfordshire. This property, a weekend residence for the principal, is visited approximately 30 weekends per year. The role requires someone who can ensure the smooth and efficient running of the household, manage the staff, and oversee the upkeep and preservation of the estate. The ideal candidate will be hands-on, calm under pressure, and possess a positive and proactive attitude. They will lead by example to foster a harmonious and professional environment, ensuring the highest standards are maintained at all times. Key Responsibilities 1. Household Management: * Oversee and manage a team of housekeepers and the gardener, ensuring high standards of cleanliness, organisation, and care. * Create and manage staff schedules, ensuring coverage for the principal’s visits. * Provide hands-on support to staff when required, leading by example. 2. Property Upkeep: * Ensure the upkeep, maintenance, and security of this historic property. * Coordinate and oversee restoration and maintenance projects, liaising with contractors and specialists as needed. * Conduct regular property inspections to identify areas requiring attention or improvement. 3. Preparation for Principal’s Visits: * Supervise the preparation of the property before the Principal’s visits, ensuring all aspects of the household are to their liking. * Act as the main point of contact for the Principal during their stays, providing seamless service and addressing any needs promptly. 4. Administrative Duties: * Manage household budgets and expenses, ensuring cost-effective operations. * Maintain detailed records of maintenance schedules, inventories, and staff rosters. * Source and liaise with vendors, contractors, and suppliers for household needs and projects. 5. Leadership: * Create a positive, collaborative work environment for staff, fostering open communication and teamwork. * Train and mentor staff to uphold the Principal’s preferences and the household’s standards. * Resolve any staff or operational issues with discretion and efficiency. Candidate Requirements * Proven experience in managing a large private household or estate. * Strong leadership and organisational skills, with the ability to manage a team effectively. * Experience overseeing property maintenance, including coordinating restoration or preservation projects. * Exceptional attention to detail and a hands-on approach. * Ability to remain calm and professional * Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with a diplomatic and discreet nature.
