Volunteers who support the project learn a wide range of practical conservation skills as well as being offered the chance to help with environmental education and public greenspace projects. The input of volunteers to a small project such as the Steel Valley Project is invaluable and proves crucial in the delivery of our project work.

The current volunteer teams carry out a range of various practical countryside management tasks for the benefit of wildlife and the local general public within the greenspaces and rural areas around the Stocksbridge & North Sheffield region. This can include:

  • Public Right of Way access maintenance and installation (strimming, installing benches, way-markers, steps, gates, fencing, dry stone walling etc.)
  • Woodland management (tree planting, coppicing, layering, tree felling and branch work)
  • Other habitat type management (hedge-laying, meadow management, heathland management)
  • School workshops
  • Raising environmental awareness
