Main duties of the job:

The post will be ideally suited to a qualified Practice Nurse with experience in childhood immunisations, travel vaccines, cytology, and wound management. The practice will consider nursing experience looking for a new and exciting role in Primary Care. The practice is dedicated to providing training and helping employees with ongoing personal development. Ability to work autonomously and with the existing team is essential for this role.

About us:

The Buntingford and Puckeridge Medical Practice is based across two sites in the beautiful Hertfordshire countryside, serving a population of 20,400 and is expanding and looking for a Practice Nurse to join our team.

Job responsibilities:

  • To provide and maintain a high standard of nursing care for patients, through management of chronic disease and support for treatment room activities as well as providing nursing assistance to the doctors and other members of the primary healthcare team.

Job Responsibilities:

  • Assist in and perform routine tasks related to patient care as directed by senior nursing staff and GPs. Such tasks may include:
  • Basic wound care / ulcer care
  • Removal of sutures
  • New patient medicals
  • Urinalysis
  • ECGs
  • Peak flow readings
  • Venepuncture
  • Blood pressure measurements
  • Ear syringing
  • Routine immunisations
  • Cervical cytology
  • Chaperoning and assisting patients where appropriate who are being examined by another clinician
  • Assisting GPs with minor surgery and coil fittings
  • Requesting basic pathology tests, e.g., urine culture, swabs
  • Following agreed clinical protocols with referral to senior nurses or GPs as appropriate
  • Other tasks including:
    • Maintaining GP and nurse rooms, stocking and rotating items as required
    • Undertake housekeeping duties including general tidiness and cleanliness of nurse and treatment rooms
    • Ordering of health promotion literature and stock
    • Ordering of vaccinations to maintain stock levels
    • Participation in administrative systems in the practice

    At all times there will be a need to maintain accurate records. A duty to advise senior nurses of potential problems or errors within the range of assigned tasks. Attend and participate in any practice meetings when required. On occasion, there may be a requirement to undertake home visits. Any other delegated duties appropriate to the post.

    Person Specification:

    • Qualifications: Registered Nurse or Registered Nursing Associate on the NMC register.
    • Experience:
    • Experience working in accordance with the NMC Code of Professional Conduct
    • Experience working within a nursing team
    • Experience working with a range of patients
    • Broad knowledge of clinical governance
    • Knowledge of Infection Prevention Control including public health issues in the local area
    • Understands the requirement for PGDs, PSDs and associated policy
    • Interest and understanding of clinical coding in general and Read coding in particular
    • Basic knowledge in long-term conditions
    • Ability to listen, empathise with people and provide person-centred support in a non-judgemental way
    • Able to communicate effectively, both verbally and in writing, with people, their families, carers, community groups, partner agencies and stakeholders
    • Ability to identify risk and assess/manage risk when working with individuals
    • Demonstrates personal accountability, emotional resilience and works well under pressure
    • Ability to organise, plan and prioritise on own initiative, including when under pressure and meeting deadlines
    • High level of written and oral communication skills
    • Ability to work flexibly and enthusiastically within a team or on own initiative
    • Knowledge of and ability to work to policies and procedures, including confidentiality, safeguarding, lone working, information governance and health and safety
    • Experience of working in a primary care environment
    • Requesting pathology tests and processing the results, advising patients accordingly
