Fixed term for 12 months

£36,396 per annum

About the role:

The British Museum is currently undertaking a large project of documentation and registration of its objects. The Department of Money & Medals is playing a significant role in this project with the recent creation of tens of thousands of new records. This role will complement the ongoing documentation work by undertaking research on the Museum\’s collection of Ancient Greek and Roman Provincial coins with a resulting improvement in its documentation. The primary focus of the role will be to undertake provenance research on the coins, identifying individual coins in archival material and understanding previous ownership of historic collections. It will also involve adding full descriptions of the images and inscriptions on the coins, as well as references to standard numismatic catalogues to the Museum\’s collections management system. In addition, the postholder will undertake a programme of reorganisation of the collection of Ancient Greek and Roman Provincial coins. Finally, this role provides an opportunity for career development, allowing the postholder to develop and undertake a research project, focusing on an aspect of the Ancient Greek or Roman Provincial coin collection or its history and identify avenues for further research.

Key areas of responsibilities

• To lead on researching and improving the documentation of the Greek and Roman Provincial coins collection in the Museum\’s collection management system, MI+.
• To make the collection (and knowledge about it) publicly accessible via publication, digital, display, and broadcast.
• To work as a team member with colleagues within and beyond the department, and undertake some departmental administrative work
• To act as an advocate for the Museum and develop a good understanding of museums and relevant best practice.
• To assist with enquiries from the public in a timely manner.
• To assist in the general day-to-day running of the department and develop ideas for possible future research projects.
• Other appropriate duties as assigned.

About you:

• BA/BSc (or equivalent) in classics, archaeology, ancient history or a related subject.
• Experience with object documentation (ideally Greek and/or Roman Provincial numismatics)
• Attention to detail with data input and good ICT skills
• Ability to resolve people and projects management issues
• Be able to work as part of a team and independently, to meet deadlines.
