The British Museum is seeking a Management Accountant to deliver high-quality financial insight, support strategic decision-making, and help ensure the responsible stewardship of its funds. As a key member of the Finance team, you will provide a first‑class management accounting service, working closely with departments such as Estates and Capital Projects, Information Services, Visitor Services and Security to support budgeting, reporting, and financial planning.

Responsibilities

  • Prepare timely and accurate management accounts, forecasts and reports.
  • Support the budgeting process across multiple departments.
  • Produce quarterly forecasts and financial analysis to inform decision‑making.
  • Contribute to year‑end accounts and consolidated financial statements, liaising with auditors.
  • Ensure compliance with charity regulations, donor restrictions and public sector requirements.

Business Partnering and Stakeholder Engagement

  • Act as a finance representative, supporting and advising non‑finance colleagues.
  • Build strong relationships across departments, supporting financial understanding and accountability.

Projects and Strategic Support

  • Analyse income streams and expenditure to improve efficiency and sustainability.
  • Support business cases, funding applications and grant reporting.

Qualifications

  • ACA (or equivalent) qualified.
  • Strong technical knowledge of relevant accounting standards, income tax, NI, VAT and regulatory frameworks.
  • Advanced Microsoft Excel and financial systems skills, ideally with experience using Unit4ERP and/or Business Central.
  • Excellent communication skills, with the ability to explain financial information to non‑specialists.
  • Highly organised, with the ability to manage competing priorities.
  • Strong attention to detail and problem‑solving skills.
  • Proactive, collaborative and confident in influencing stakeholders.
  • Experience of working in a Non‑Department Public Body or the charitable sector and an interest in the arts, heritage or other relevant sectors is advantageous.
