ROLE SUMMARY The fundamental purpose of the role is to raise the capabilities and skills of our people to serve consumer needs better and create a sustainable, successful organisation. In this position, you will lead efforts to identify capability development needs, determine a proactive capability development strategy and enable learning for trade and non-management employees across Western Europe Area. The role partners with business leaders to translate commercial priorities into skill standards and learning journeys, embedding the company’s Leadership Capabilities and values into everyday performance. Support the BAT Western Europe Area talent agenda by specifically focusing on capability development of trade teams and non-management employees. Enabling a high-performance culture by providing expert HR Talent solutions in line with organizational requirements. To do so, working closely with Western Europe HR team and leadership teams.
ROLE DUTIES AND ACCOUNTABILITIES
- Market needs analysis & capability standards – Lead bottoms‑up/top‑down diagnosis for trade & non‑management populations; define capability standards, proficiency rubrics and role curricula that reflect country nuances while maintaining a consistent multi‑market core.
- Learning journey design – Build blended learning paths with clear “learn‑do‑apply‑measure” loops, simplify content for frontline adoption.
- Deployment across Western Europe Area countries – Orchestrate roll‑outs with HRBPs and Sales/Trade leaders; stand up trainer networks; plan waves; manage translations/local compliance, ensure inclusion & accessibility.
- Measurement & insights – Define Key Performance Indicators and dashboards, run pilots, course‑correct based on evidence.
- Vendor management – Source/brief vendors, assure quality, leverage internal content before buying.
- Partner engagement – Run crisp governance with regional/market leaders, share progress, tell the impact story.
- Continuous improvement – Harvest best practices across the markets, maintain a reusable, modular library, scale what works, retire what doesn’t.
- Systems expert for all development related tools (ED app, The Grid, SharePoint).
EXPERIENCE, SKILLS, KNOWLEDGE ESSENTIAL
Experience Required
- Minimum 3 years of working experience in a business focused HR function with proven market deployment experience.
- Experience in working in an international company with matrix organization and experience in working with cross‑functional teams.
- Frontline/trade or field‑sales exposure strongly preferred.
Technical / Functional / Leadership Skills Required
- Demonstrated the capacity and interest to integrate the need for business results with a people‑oriented approach.
- Have a drive for excellence: high expectation for the quality of work, proactive in nature and comfortable to take care of ambiguity and to influence a wide array of partners.
- Strong project management and implementation skills, preferably with experience from indirect leadership.
- Strong planning, organising and analytical skills paired with capability to translate insights into tangible recommendations for people practices.
- Excellent interpersonal and listening skills.
- A high level of creativity and ability to innovate.
- Data fluency: define learning Key Performance Indicators, analyse dashboards, translate insights into action.
- Competent spoken and written English.
Education / Professional Qualifications / Certifications Required
- Bachelor's degree in Business, Human Resources, Psychology or related field. Master’s degree is considered a plus.
