ROLE SUMMARY
To handle & implement sustainability initiatives within the New Categories scope, ensuring alignment with global procurement strategy & corporate sustainability targets. The role focuses on delivering measurable environmental impact to accelerate our sustainability goals.
KEY OBJECTIVES
- Develop category-specific emissions reduction plans aligned with interpersonal sustainability goals.
- Build internal procurement and supplier capabilities for LCA, primary data, and product carbon footprint measurement.
- Partner with Category teams, R&D and strategic suppliers to embed sustainability into sourcing strategies and SRM.
- Integrate sustainability processes and governance into the procurement operating model.
- Drive early adoption of data driven, tech‑enabled solutions to accelerate digital transformation in sustainability.

The role enables BAT’s sustainable ambition by driving actionable emissions reduction, building supplier and internal capability and ensuring compliance.

- Core Relationships: Internal – Procurement at all levels, Sust Corp Team, Sust Ops Team; External – Suppliers, NGOs, legislators & peer collaborations
- Geographic Scope: Global
- Travel Required: 20%
ROLE DUTIES AND ACCOUNTABILITIES
- Goal Setting: Define end‑to‑end sustainability objectives for New Categories in alignment with global procurement and sustainability targets.
- Performance Management: Deliver sustainability critical metrics, including a robust emissions reduction glidepath for New Categories suppliers.
- Capability Building: Plan and implement impactful capability initiatives for New Categories suppliers including Supplier enablement Programme.
- Lead Champion: Internal Procurement Capability Building – Lead Champion for ALL Global Sustainability Centre of Excellence learning and development planning and execution (all categories).
- Lead Champion: Environment Processes – Lead Champion to maintain and define ALL environment‑related processes and partners with Procurement excellence team and transformation Manager.
- Supplier Engagements: Lead planning, organizing, and implementation of category‑specific supplier enablement programs to accelerate achieving sustainability targets.
- Data & Carbon Footprint: Drive initiatives to unlock Life Cycle Assessment (LCA), product carbon footprint, and primary data collection.
- Cross‑Functional Collaborations: Partner with new categories, procurement functions and global sustainability teams to drive sustainability initiatives and accelerate sustainability outcomes, contribute to reporting and assurance processes.
- Continuous Improvement: Perform peer and industry benchmarking, support climate transition planning, and embrace a zero‑loss attitude for process optimisation.
- Digital Transformation: Formulate New Categories digital transformation specification requirements and ensure alignment with Digital lead for planning, execution and implementation.
- Risk & Compliance: Perform control self‑health checks, manage risk registers, ensure business and suppliers are ready for regulations.
EXPERIENCE, SKILLS, KNOWLEDGE
ESSENTIAL
- Proven experience in Procurement, Sustainability, or Operations within a global organisation.
- Strong understanding of ESG principles, procurement processes, and sustainability reporting frameworks.
- Knowledge of procurement methodologies, including category management and sourcing strategies.
- Understanding of supplier climate programmes and supplier enablement initiatives.
- Demonstrated experience in strategic supplier relationship management (SRM) to drive sustainability objectives.
- Extensive knowledge of supply markets, supplier capabilities, and competitor trends.
- Advanced proficiency in data analysis, interpretation, and quality assurance to support sustainability in procurement.
Technical / Functional / Leadership Skills Required
- High level of commercial & sustainability awareness with strong capability in supplier programme planning and supplier relationship management.
- Deep understanding of sustainability practices, frameworks, tools, and methodologies.
- Understanding of New Categories business and environment.
- Solid understanding of procurement principles, including category management and sourcing strategies.
- Experience in managing risk, process governance, and ensuring audit compliance.
- Proven ability to lead and manage sophisticated, cross‑functional projects and high‑risk change initiatives.
- Experience in crafting learning and development programmes for internal and external partners.
- Ability to work across markets and functions, encouraging cohesion and collaboration.
- Speed and timely delivery of category plans aligned with sustainability objectives.
- Strong numerical and analytical capabilities for data‑driven decision‑making.
- Ability to influence suppliers and internal partners, with excellent interpersonal and communication skills, maintaining effective partnerships across geographic boundaries.
- Demonstrates agility, adaptability and resilience in dynamic environments.

Education / Qualifications / Certifications Required
- Relevant Business / Engineering / Environment Science / Supply Chain qualifications.
- MCIPS / Master’s in business / Environmental Science or equivalent experience is an advantage.
