Key Objectives and Expectations:

  • Deliver chemical compliance activities to ensure observance of BAT Products and Consumables to end-market legislations and internal/external standards.
  • Work closely with the Global Product Compliance Team to deliver training for key stakeholders on chemical regulatory requirements and processes (e.g. Globally Harmonized System of Classification and Labelling of Chemicals, Safety Data Sheet authorship etc.) to ensure cross category chemical regulatory compliance.
  • Conduct chemical‑regulation‑focused audits of in market competitor products to assess their compliance, clearly communicating insights to internal stakeholders to inform business decisions and strategic opportunities.

Direct Impact on Team or Organization:

  • Ensuring that global compliance requirements are met and is key in assisting BAT in achieving its business goals.
  • This role will have responsibility for the chemical and substance compliance content of the product portfolio which is relied upon by BAT compliance and product/project delivery teams.

  • Reports to: PRC Manager III - Chemical Compliance & Insights
  • Number of Direct Reports: 0
  • Core Relationships: Internal – Global PRC team, Global Legal Teams, Product Competitor Intelligence Team, R & S Teams; External – External Law Firms, Regulatory Consultancy Groups
  • Geographic Scope: Global
  • Travel Required: Flexible to travel, if required.

Your Key Responsibilities:

  • Conduct chemical‑regulation‑focused audits of in market competitor products to assess their compliance, clearly communicating insights to internal stakeholders to inform business decisions and strategic opportunities.
  • Build strong and effective ways of working with Product Competitor Intelligence teams to obtain product competitor information in a timely manner.
  • Providing timely feedback to project and functional Leadership teams on consequences of chemical regulation impact assessments.
  • Develop & deliver training for key stakeholders on chemical regulatory requirements and processes (e.g. Globally Harmonised System of Classification and Labelling of Chemicals, Safety Data Sheet authorship etc.) to ensure cross category chemical regulatory compliance.
  • Engage with R&D teams, Product, Operations, and other business units to provide proactive compliance guidance on proposed business strategies and programs based on chemical compliance procedures, rules and regulations, and ensure product regulations and compliance processes are embedded into business thinking.
  • Ensure thorough understanding of product development and deployment cycle plans to pro‑actively technical impact/chemical compliance assessments.

Experience Required:

  • Working knowledge of global chemical regulatory requirements (such as European REACH and CLP regulations) and the Global Harmonised System (GHS) framework for chemicals.
  • Ability to conduct product compliance audits/impact and risk assessments and present findings in clear and simple terms effectively to the relevant stakeholders.
  • Knowledge of BAT’s smokeless products portfolio.

Technical / Functional / Leadership Skills Required:

  • Ability to work with technical and non‑technical business stakeholders to get things done.
  • Excellent, proactive communication, stakeholder engagement and networking skills.
  • Ability to manage upwards effectively and assertively, as well as within the peer group, to acquire the necessary information, and help drive and inform the decision‑making process by the appropriately placed people (both at the senior and junior level).
  • Flexible and confident to find a way forward through unknown and changing environments.
  • Identify new opportunities for process improvement and improved communication with stakeholders to drive efficiency, delivery and visibility of work.
  • Maintains awareness of the current & emerging chemical regulatory environment.

Education / Qualifications / Certifications Required:

  • Educated to bachelor’s degree or higher, preferably in a scientific or legal field.
