Be Part of Something That Matters

At The Bread and Butter Thing (TBBT), we believe no one should have to choose between food and other essentials. We take surplus food that would otherwise go to waste and get it into the hands of people who need it most, making life more affordable for tens of thousands of families each week. But it doesn’t stop at food. Our community-led model helps people move from crisis to confidence, with a focus on dignity, connection, and long-term change. We’re growing fast and doing more than ever before. That’s where you come in.

The Opportunity

We’re looking for a dedicated and organised volunteer to support our Trustee Board as Secretariat. You’ll play a key role in helping our Board run smoothly, so we can keep focusing on what matters most — supporting communities and tackling food inequality. This is a great opportunity for someone early in their career, or looking to develop new skills, to gain hands-on experience in charity governance, strategy, and leadership.

You might be:

  • A paralegal, trainee solicitor or junior lawyer looking to grow your governance experience
  • An admin pro ready to step into a more strategic, purpose-driven space
  • Someone curious about how charities work behind the scenes, with a passion for impact

We’re not just looking for experience. We’re looking for someone who shares our values and is excited to learn, contribute and grow with us.

What You’ll Be Doing

You’ll work closely with our Chair and Board of Trustees to keep things running smoothly and efficiently:

  • Keep Us Organised: Schedule Board and subcommittee meetings, liaise with Trustees, and manage calendars and logistics
  • Support Decision-Making: Prepare and circulate agendas and Board papers, follow up on actions, and ensure things are kept on track
  • Be Our Memory: Attend meetings (virtually or in person), take clear, concise minutes, and maintain key records in line with governance standards
  • Be the Link: Act as a friendly and reliable point of contact between the Board, our leadership team and wider organisation

Who You Are

We’re looking for someone who is:

  • Organised, dependable, and detail-focused
  • Comfortable working with senior stakeholders
  • Interested in charity governance, community impact, and how big change happens behind the scenes
  • A quick learner who thrives on being helpful and proactive
  • Able to handle sensitive information with care and professionalism

Experience in law, admin, compliance or governance is helpful, but not essential if you’re eager and willing to learn.

What You’ll Get Out of It

  • Insight & Learning: A front-row seat into how a growing charity is run, from governance and compliance to strategic planning
  • Skills Development: Real-world experience that strengthens your CV, especially if you’re interested in charity, law, operations or leadership
  • Connection & Mentorship: Work with passionate Trustees and senior leaders, and build relationships across sectors
  • Purpose & Pride: Know that you’re making a real difference, helping us grow our reach and support more families across the UK

How to Get Involved

If this sounds like your kind of thing, we’d love to hear from you. Please send a short expression of interest and your CV to - just tell us why the role caught your eye, and what you’re hoping to gain.
