An opportunity has arisen to be part of a new team tackling environmental anti-social behaviour and crime in Gateshead, including fly-tipping and waste issues, littering and graffiti. The team will investigate environmental ASB, visit affected areas, identify causes, those responsible and take action. They will provide advice, support and take enforcement action.
The role will involve:
- Investigating environmental crime and ASB, visits and inspections, providing advice and support to those affected, preparing and issuing formal notices, making applications for and executing warrants, gathering evidence, carrying out interviews under caution and presenting evidence in court.
- Working with residents to identify support needs and liaise with others to ensure individuals have the support they need to resolve and prevent environmental anti-social behaviour.
- Identifying the need for and implementing proactive campaigns to tackle environmental ASB, monitoring and updating information systems and evaluating impact.
- Identifying opportunities for residents to be involved in improving their environment.
What you will get involved in:
- Investigate environmental crime and anti‑social behaviour, working with homeowners, tenants, landlords, internal Council services, and external organisations to resolve complaints, protect people from harm, and prevent recurrence.
- Conduct in‑depth investigations, visits, and inspections to determine the causes of environmental crime or ASB, proactively identify victims or perpetrators, assess the most appropriate course of action, and take necessary steps.
- Provide advice and support to individuals affected by, or responsible for, environmental ASB to stop issues and prevent them from recurring.
- Support the Senior Environmental ASB Officer in identifying the need for, planning, and delivering proactive campaigns to address current or emerging environmental ASB issues, gathering stakeholder feedback, and evaluating impact.
- Manage personal workload effectively to meet priorities and achieve key performance targets in line with Council performance indicators, service standards, and annual appraisal objectives.
- Monitor and update information systems, ensuring accuracy and compliance with GDPR, and produce reports and statistical information as required.
- Take enforcement action by preparing and issuing formal notices, statutory letters, and documents; applying for and executing warrants to enter domestic properties; arranging and carrying out works in default; gathering and preserving evidence; conducting interviews under caution; and presenting evidence in court.
- Work with residents to identify support needs, make appropriate referrals, and liaise with partners and support services to help individuals resolve and prevent environmental ASB and improve their wellbeing.
- Promote opportunities for resident involvement and contribute to planning and participating in consultation activities relating to community safety and environmental ASB services.
- Liaise with other Council departments and external agencies to support a coordinated, multi‑agency approach to tackling environmental crime and ASB.
- Undertake out‑of‑hours work when required.
- Carry out any other duties appropriate to the grade of the post.
What you'll need to be successful:
- Knowledge: Understanding of environmental anti‑social behaviour and the legislation relating to environmental crime and enforcement. Knowledge of methods and approaches used to resolve environmental ASB issues. Awareness of the environmental ASB investigator’s role in safeguarding and data protection.
- Qualifications: Five GCSEs grade A–C / 9–4 including Maths and English, or relevant equivalent experience. Full driving licence, or the ability to meet the mobility requirements of the role.
- Experience: Experience in addressing and resolving environmental anti‑social behaviour issues. Experience in taking appropriate forms of enforcement action. Strong planning, organisational, communication, time-management and customer service skills. Experience dealing with potentially difficult or challenging situations. Experience providing support to vulnerable individuals. Effective negotiation and communication skills, both written and verbal. Experience working in partnership with a range of internal and external stakeholders. Experience working under pressure and meeting targets and deadlines.
