The Highways & Waste team are responsible for ensuring that Gateshead is a safe and attractive place in which people can live, work and spend free time. From waste strategy, including collection and recycling to the maintenance of our highways and street lighting. You’ve probably also noticed significant investment in the restoration of the Tyne Bridge, and our Highways team continue to play a pivotal role in that restoration project of a local landmark.

In the role you will co-ordinate work in relation to the construction of new adopted highway by developers, including the technical aspects of S38 agreements, checking and agreement of designs, inspection of works and issuing of certificates. You will co-ordinate activity in relation to the undertaking of works to the adopted highway through S278 agreements, including the technical aspects of agreements, checking and agreement of designs, inspection of works and issuing of certificates. The role also co-ordinate activity in relation to proposals for the stopping up of adopted highway or the adoption of private streets.

We would expect that you would assist in the development and maintenance of a customer orientated, high quality approach to service delivery to ensure that the service remains relevant and appropriate. To facilitate this, it is necessary to work as part of a team collaborating and sharing knowledge openly to enhance service delivery, ensuring both individual and team objectives are met. Additionally, you would be expected to keep up to date with policies and procedures and participate in meetings and attend training as necessary.

What you’ll need to be successful

Knowledge of:

  • A thorough knowledge of highway adoption procedures
  • Experience of site inspections
  • Knowledge of highway law in relation to highway adoption procedures
  • Proficient in the use of AutoCAD, Microsoft Office and Project

Experience of:

  • Relevant experience at an appropriate level of responsibility in a traffic / transportation or engineering environment

Qualifications:

  • Educated to degree level in an engineering field or possession of incorporated engineer status
  • Current driving licence
