What you’ll be doing

Boots, one of the UK’s most trusted and respected retail brands, is seeking a driven, resilient and highly strategic Head of Consumer Communications. The successful candidate will be deeply experienced in consumer communications, with a proven track record of delivering creative and newsworthy campaigns for high‑profile brands and landing strong, proactive stories. Comfortable with operating in an exceptionally fast‑paced and ever‑evolving retail landscape, the role requires combining traditional PR approaches with innovative high‑impact storytelling, to shape media and influencer perception and excite customers about the many reasons to shop with and visit Boots.

Key responsibilities

  • Strategic Leadership: Develop, drive, and execute Boots’ consumer communications strategy, ensuring consistent alignment with business objectives and brand values. Anticipate market trends, seize opportunities and respond decisively to the news agenda.
  • Campaign Delivery: Spearhead the planning and execution of innovative, effective consumer PR campaigns that resonate with key audiences. Measure and report on impact, ensuring Boots remains front of mind in a crowded market.
  • Team Leadership & Development: Lead, inspire, and challenge a high‑performing PR team. Set ambitious targets, foster a culture of excellence and ensure exceptional delivery against stretching KPIs.
  • Media relations: Develop and nurture strong relationships with key media and influencer contacts to maximise positive outcomes and shape favourable perception of the brand.
  • Stakeholder Engagement: Cultivate and sustain positive relationships with senior internal stakeholders, external agency partners and key opinion leaders. Influence at the highest levels, acting as a trusted spokesperson.
  • Continuous Improvement: Challenge the status quo, drive step‑change improvements, and ensure Boots is ahead of the curve with how it shares its stories.
  • Reputation Management: Act as a brand guardian, proactively managing Boots’ reputation. Navigate high‑pressure situations, delivering effective responses under tight deadlines.

What you’ll need to have

  • Significant senior‑level PR and communications experience in a fast‑moving consumer‑facing environment (retail, FMCG, or similar).
  • Proven track record in leading, shaping and delivering large‑scale PR campaigns in‑house alongside strong and creative day‑to‑day storytelling.
  • Exceptional leadership skills, with a demonstrable ability to motivate, coach and develop teams.
  • Brilliant media operator with excellent relationships across a wide variety of consumer, news, broadcast and trade publications, and well connected amongst relevant influencer population.
  • Outstanding written and verbal communication abilities, with exceptional attention to detail and strong judgement.
  • Demonstrable confidence and credibility in influencing media and key stakeholders at all levels, securing buy‑in for PR initiatives and acting as a trusted spokesperson.
  • Strong commercial acumen and analytical skills, with the ability to measure PR effectiveness and ROI.
  • Ability to thrive under pressure, managing competing priorities in a fast‑paced environment.
  • Resilient, curious, creative, agile and unflappable in the face of challenge.
  • Relevant degree or professional qualification in PR, communications or journalism preferred.
