We are seeking a Mechanical Systems Field Engineer to join the on-site C-17 Field Operations Engineering and Technical Support (FETS) team in support of the Royal Air Force at RAF Brize Norton. The role focuses on mechanical, structural and hydro-mechanical system support for operational aircraft, troubleshooting and resolving complex in-service issues, and providing hands-on mentoring and technical guidance to RAF maintainers.
In this role you will be responsible for:
- Diagnose, troubleshoot and resolve complex mechanical, structural and hydro-mechanical system problems on C-17 aircraft in an operational environment.
- Provide clear, practical repair guidance and technical recommendations to RAF maintainers and leadership.
- Interpret and apply technical documentation (drawings, engineering orders, maintenance manuals, system schematics) to ensure correct maintenance and repair actions.
- Deliver on-the-job training and demonstrations explaining system theory, maintenance procedures, servicing and troubleshooting techniques.
- Support airworthiness and mission readiness by identifying corrective actions, coordinating spares and support equipment, and recommending safe courses of action.
- Prepare and submit technical reports, publication change requests, continuous improvement data and product review documentation to record field activities and drive improvements.
- Collaborate with Boeing engineering, supply and customer teams, and provide similar support to other C-17 operators as needed.
- Travel to other operating locations to support maintenance, recovery and operational tasks when required.
Required Education / Experience:
- Bachelor of Science degree in Engineering (with a focus on Mechanical, Civil, Aerospace Aeronautical or Material Sciences).
- Demonstrable experience troubleshooting integrated mechanical and hydro-mechanical aircraft systems in an operational environment using technical orders, wiring/schematic diagrams, and historical repair data.
- Proven background in aircraft repair philosophy, airframe structures, and fluid/hydraulic systems.
- Familiarity with aircraft support equipment and common maintenance tooling.
- Ability to work under time pressure in a 24/7 operational environment; on-call availability may be required.
- Prior C-17 or military transport aircraft experience is desirable.
- Eligible for UK SC security clearance.
Preferred Knowledge & Skills:
- Understanding of aircraft electrical, environmental, propulsion, mission and avionics systems as they interface with mechanical systems.
- Experience with materials review and product review processes (MRA, MRB, supplier MRB, post-production review).
- Strong technical writing and documentation skills.
- Practical experience mentoring and training maintenance personnel.
