The Software Engineering and Systems Integration team in the UK is actively working across Boeing Defence, Commercial Airplanes, Global services and Uncrewed technologies. The Software Engineering team works in the development of Synthetic Environment Sub-systems, Mission Systems Capability, Autonomous Behaviours, enhancement of Ground Control Systems, Technical Publications and various in-house proprietary tools for the Defence platforms. The team is also contributing to Boeing Commercial Airplanes (BCA) Seats Certification.

We are now seeking a Senior Seat Systems Software Certification Engineer based in Bristol UK, to support the growing BCA Seats statement of work (SoW). Within this role you will contribute to the mission of certifying and delivering safe and reliable airborne software components, in collaboration with our suppliers and global Boeing sites. You will ensure our aircraft not only meets but exceeds the rigorous safety standards set forth by the European Aviation Safety Agency (EASA) and/or US Federal Aviation Authority (FAA). The Software Engineer will be part of the team fostering a culture of safety and excellence, making significant contributions to the certification process against DO-178B/C objectives and working across all SOIs.

This requisition is for a locally hired position in Bristol, UK. Benefits and pay are determined at the local level and are not part of Boeing U.S. based payroll. This position is expected to be hybrid with 3 days working from office. This means that the selected candidate will be required to perform some work onsite. This is at the hiring team’s discretion and could potentially change in the future.

Business Travel Requirement: You will be required to travel up to 25% of your working time to collaborate with different stakeholders and other Boeing locations, both domestically across the UK (Bristol, Fleet, and Frimley) and internationally.

Position Responsibilities

  • Lead software certification strategy and execution for seat‑related embedded systems (seat controllers, motors, occupant sensors, in‑seat electronics, integrated cabin control interfaces).
  • Act as the primary technical authority for DO‑178C/ED‑12C‑based certification efforts for seat software and coordinate cross‑functional and supplier activities to achieve regulatory approvals.
  • Mentor junior engineers, drive process improvements, and represent Boeing in regulatory reviews and supplier negotiations.
  • Review suppliers’ software lifecycle data throughout software lifecycle processes; from planning, requirements, development/implementation, verification and certification phases.
  • Oversee supplier software development and lifecycle processes, perform supplier audits/assessments, and ensure supplier deliverables meet Boeing standards and regulatory expectations.
  • Oversee and verify the compliance preparation and submission of comprehensive technical documentation required for certification.
  • Work collaboratively and transparently with regulatory representatives, Boeing EUMs suppliers and global Boeing sites to ensure all systems and software designs comply with stringent regulatory requirements and safety standards.
  • Prepare and maintain certification packages and software compliance documentation submitted to certification authorities; respond to technical inquiries and auditor requests.
  • Perform activities to develop, document and maintain architectures, requirements, algorithms, interfaces and designs for software systems.
  • Perform activities to automate the certification process.
  • Provide subject‑matter expertise during certification reviews, design reviews, and regulator meetings; travel to supplier sites, test labs, and regulator sessions as needed.

Basic Qualifications (Required Skills/Experience)

  • Bachelor of Science degree or higher from an accredited course of study in engineering, engineering technology, chemistry, physics, mathematics, data science, or computer science.
  • Ability to obtain security clearance.

Preferred Qualifications (Desired Skills/Experience)

  • 10+ years of experience applying RTCA DO‑178(B/C/D) Software Considerations in Airborne Systems and Equipment Certification, with emphasis on Embedded Software in planning, requirements/traceability, verification, reviews, and certification artifacts.
  • 5+ years of experience across Software Lifecycle Data Items, and Software standards such as DO‑330 and DO‑331.
  • Lead software safety analyses, support system safety cases, and propose architectural/mitigation strategies to reduce software‑related hazards.
  • Prepare, present, and defend certification artifacts to internal Boeing authorities and external regulators; respond to audit questions and findings.
  • Proven experience leading supplier oversight, audits, and resolving supplier‑supplied software issues.
  • Strong background in real‑time embedded software, RTOS, device drivers, and HW–SW integration for avionics ECUs.
  • Excellent technical writing and oral presentation skills for regulatory submissions and reviews.
  • Knowledge of DO‑254 (FPGA/ASIC) interactions when seat controllers include custom hardware.
  • Drive improvements to Boeing seat‑software certification processes, templates, automation, and tools; mentor/lead junior certification engineers.
  • Manage schedule, risk, and stakeholder expectations for certification milestones; travel to suppliers, test labs, and regulatory meetings as required.
  • Experience with Boeing processes and specifications, or prior OEM certification experience.
  • Experience using common software version control tools such as Git, or equivalent.
  • Experience with Agile planning tool such as JIRA, GITLAB, or similar.
