The Software Engineering and Systems Integration team in the UK works across Boeing Defence, Commercial Airplanes, Global Services, and Uncrewed Technologies. The Software Engineering team develops Synthetic Environment Sub-systems, Mission Systems Capability, Autonomous Behaviours, enhances Ground Control Systems, Technical Publications, and various in-house proprietary tools for the Defence platforms. The team also contributes to Commercial Modifications of aircraft, development of Onboard Network Systems, Cabin Interiors, and supporting Supplemental Type Certification effort.

The E-7 Mission Systems and Commercial Mods Certification Engineer will be based in Bristol to support the growing Commercial Modifications statement of work (SoW) and contribute to the Mission Systems Capability within the defence portfolio.

Commercial Responsibilities:
  • Contribute to the mission of certifying and delivering safe and reliable airborne software components, in collaboration with our suppliers and global Boeing sites.
  • Ensure aircraft meets and exceeds the rigorous safety standards set forth by EASA and/or FAA.
  • Play a vital role in fostering a culture of safety and excellence, making significant contributions to the certification process against DO-178B/C objectives across all SOIs.
Defence Responsibilities:
  • Development and sustainment of E-7 U.K. Mission Systems to deliver Aircraft Mission Computing and Ground Mission Support software from the U.K. in collaboration with Boeing Defence Australia and Boeing Defence U.S.
  • Establish technical scope of work in the UK based on the requirement for delivering U.K. unique capabilities, in collaboration with global teams.
  • Define the capability requirements (tools, methods, process, people) needed to deliver the defined scope of work.

This requisition is for a locally hired position in Bristol, Fleet, or Frimley, UK. Benefits and pay are determined at the local level and are not part of Boeing U.S. based payroll. The position is expected to be hybrid with 3 days working from office. Onsite work at one of the listed location options is required on a discretionary basis and may change in the future. Business travel required: up to 25% of working time to collaborate with stakeholders and other Boeing locations, both domestically across the UK and internationally. In the first months of employment, more frequent travel will be required.

Position Responsibilities:
  • Review and approve suppliers’ software lifecycle data (e.g., software architecture, design document, requirement document) throughout software lifecycle processes from planning to certification.
  • Generate Software Components (PDIs), User Modifiable Software (UMS) and/or Field Loadable software in response to modifications requested at aircraft level in compliance with DO-178B/C.
  • Oversee and verify the compliance preparation and submission of comprehensive technical documentation required for certification.
  • Work collaboratively with regulatory representatives, Boeing EUMs suppliers and global Boeing sites to ensure all systems and software designs comply with stringent regulatory requirements, safety standards, and Boeing’s internal standards.
  • Monitor project progress and performance, ensuring engineering solutions are delivered on time and meet all safety and certification milestones.
  • Lead activities to develop, document and maintain architectures, requirements, algorithms, interfaces and designs for software systems.
  • Lead development, selection, tailoring and deployment of processes, tools and metrics.
  • Participate in industry working groups to develop industry guidance and standards and author internal design practice documentation and standards.
Basic Qualifications:
  • Bachelor of Science degree or higher from an accredited course of study in engineering, engineering technology (including manufacturing engineering technology), chemistry, physics, mathematics, data science, or computer science.
  • Ability to obtain security clearance.
Preferred Qualifications (Level 4):
  • 5+ years of experience as or working with Designated Engineering Representative (DER), or Technical Standard Order (TSO) Certification Specialist or EASA/FAA Compliance Verification Engineer (CVE) or equivalent.
  • 10+ years of experience in RTCA DO-178(B/C/D) software considerations in airborne systems and equipment certification, with emphasis on embedded software.
  • 5+ years of experience across software lifecycle data items, and software standards such as DO-330 and DO-331.
Level 5 (Expert):
  • Current Designated Engineering Representative (DER) or Technical Standard Order (TSO) Certification Specialist or Compliance Verification Engineer (CVE).
  • 12+ years’ experience in software development life cycles, configuration management and agile software engineering best practices.
  • 10+ years’ experience developing, documenting and maintaining architectures, requirements, algorithms, interfaces and designs for software systems.
  • 10+ years’ experience leading software development projects.
  • Experience with Agile planning tools such as JIRA, GITLAB, or similar.
  • Domain expertise in either Interior Cabins, Seats, In-Flight Entertainment systems or Onboard Network Systems.
Defence Qualifications:
  • C/C++ or Java.
  • HMI experience (preferred).
  • SW design experience for near-real-time SW.
  • OS/driver integration experience desired.
  • Experience in AEWC SW design templates desired.
  • Comfortable working in Linux or other Unix systems.
  • Experience in failsafe design techniques.
  • Experience with requirements and requirement breakdown.
  • Testing experience – desired.
  • Production SW release processes.
