Boeing Defence UK is presenting an opportunity to join its extensive Safety Management System (SMS) team, focusing on the safety of products and services. The selected candidate will become part of a multidisciplinary team of approximately 20 experienced professionals, responsible for conducting Occurrence Safety Investigations in direct support of all BDUK Programmes.
This role will require travel to various BDUK locations and collaboration with multiple functions and departments throughout the investigation process. It is crucial for ensuring that timely and effective Occurrence Safety Investigations are carried out, which support the BDUK Just Culture policy and aid in the development of mitigation strategies.
The SMS Occurrence Safety Investigator will report to the Lead Occurrence Safety Investigator and will work closely with Programme SMS Leads to coordinate and execute safety investigations.
Key Responsibilities
- Plan and Lead Investigations: Direct Occurrence Safety Investigations and Local Investigations as directed by the Lead Occurrence Safety Investigator, which may include joint investigations with the MoD and BDUK Suppliers.
- Governance and Mentoring: Support a governance and mentoring program to establish and maintain the competency of all existing and newly trained Safety Investigators, ensuring a balanced availability of investigators.
- Standardization of Reports: Assist in standardizing investigation reports and ensuring compliance with the Occurrence Safety Investigation and Event Review Group processes.
- Event Review Groups: Organize and facilitate post-investigation Event Review Groups to support the BDUK Just Culture policy.
- Safety Investigation Inputs: Provide inputs and metrics related to safety investigations for relevant functional Safety Action Groups and Platform Safety Reviews meetings.
- Safety Promotion and Training: Collaborate with the Safety Promotion and Training Lead to create promotional campaigns and materials based on investigation findings.
- Record Management: Assist in managing records related to Safety Investigations and procedures.
- BowTie and Incident XP Development: Support the ongoing development of BowTie and Incident XP within the Safety Investigation process.
- In-House Training Delivery: Aid in delivering in-house Safety Investigation training.
Travel within the UK is anticipated, with some potential for overseas travel.
Essential Competencies, Experience, and Qualities
- Training in Occurrence Investigation and Occurrence Review Group in accordance with MAA RA1440 or equivalent.
- Formal training and experience in Safety Management Systems (SMS).
- Familiarity with Just Culture methodology and its application.
- Proficiency in using reporting tools and applications.
- Extensive experience in conducting SMS/occurrence safety investigations.
- Significant background in aviation maintenance and/or engineering.
- Strong communication skills, technical expertise, and effective report writing skills.
- Good understanding of military and civilian aviation regulations and their application.
- Experience in mentoring and coaching.
- The role requires a diplomatic individual who is also strong-minded, given the significant interface with UK MoD customers, suppliers, and the broader Boeing community.
Desirable Competencies
- Qualifications and experience in training delivery.
- Familiarity with common safety tools such as Risk Registers, BowTie, and Incident XP for safety investigation results.
- Experience as a Human Factors instructor/facilitator.
Eligibility for UK SC Security Clearance: Applicants must be able to obtain the necessary clearance.
On-site role with flexible working hours.
