The King’s School, Canterbury is seeking to appoint an experienced and highly skilled English as an Additional Language (EAL) specialist to support international pupils across three core areas: IELTS preparation for sixth form pupils, targeted English language and literature support for pupils in Years 9 to 11, and contribution to an Intensive EAL Summer School. The role is fixed term for one year initially with the possibility of review and renewal.

The successful candidate may be a qualified teacher or a specialist practitioner with substantial EAL and IELTS experience. This role is particularly well suited to an individual with strong academic English expertise, confidence in one-to-one and small group teaching, and a detailed, practical understanding of IELTS assessment and progression. The postholder will play a key role in the school’s developing IELTS provision and in enabling EAL pupils to access the wider curriculum successfully.

Responsibilities:
  • Teach scheduled IELTS classes during term time:
  • Monday: 14:30–15:30 and 17:00–18:00
  • Wednesday: 17:00–18:00
  • Friday: 17:00–18:00
  • Provide approximately five hours per week of one-to-one English language support, delivered flexibly across the week.
  • Potential for the role to expand to include an additional EAL teaching group in Shell, subject to pupil need and timetabling.
  • Overall expectation of approximately 10 to 15 hours of EAL teaching per week during term time (33 weeks).
  • Contribute to the Intensive EAL Summer School in August (not a requirement, but opportunity for additional contracted hours can be discussed separately).
