Are you a dog lover looking for a chance to gain practical experience and skills? Would you love to spend time with dogs but are not currently able to have a dog yourself? Blue Cross is looking for enthusiastic and caring people to help us look after our dogs until they find loving new homes.

Maintaining the wellbeing of dogs in our care is our priority and our dog carer volunteers are integral to this. You will be meeting the daily needs of dogs and helping them on their way to finding loving new homes.

What you will be doing:

  • Helping to clean the kennels and communal areas
  • Maintaining stocks of food and other items in Kennels section
  • Preparing meals and making up enrichment feeders
  • Record-keeping and monitoring aspects of the dogs’ health and welfare
  • Walking dogs on and off site
  • Helping with their training
  • Playing with and socialising our dogs
  • Helping to monitor health, welfare and behaviour of the dogs

The skills you need:

  • Regular commitment and reliability
  • An interest in dog welfare
  • Experience of owning or caring for dogs is an advantage
  • Ability to work in a team or alone
  • An understanding of the care dogs need
  • A willingness to carry out routine tasks such as cleaning
  • Willingness to learn and follow Blue Cross procedures
  • A reasonable level of fitness

You will be required to complete appropriate units of our Blue Cross Rehoming Training Programme.
