The BIM Drafter / Digital Engineering Technician supports project teams in the development, coordination, and management of Building Information Modelling (BIM) deliverables across the project lifecycle β€” from tender and design through to construction and handover.

The role is responsible for producing accurate 2D/3D drawings and models, maintaining model and data standards, supporting clash detection and coordination workflows, and helping embed digital engineering practices across the business.

Key Responsibilities

  • Develop, maintain, and update 2D drawings and 3D BIM models (Civil, Structural, MEP, or Architectural as required) using Revit, Civil 3D, Navisworks, and related platforms.
  • Convert design information, survey data, and sketches into accurate, construction-ready BIM models and drafted deliverables.
  • Support project BIM Coordinators/Managers in clash detection, model coordination, and federated model reviews.
  • Prepare and maintain drawing registers, model status reports, and digital deliverable schedules in line with project BEP (BIM Execution Plan) requirements.
  • Ensure all models and drawings comply with Mc Connell Dowell CAD/BIM standards, project-specific standards, and relevant national/international BIM protocols (e. g. ISO 19650).
  • Extract quantities, schedules, and data sets from models to support estimating, procurement, and construction planning.
  • Support the setup and maintenance of Common Data Environments (CDE) such as BIM 360, ACC, or Trimble Connect.
  • Assist in the production of 4D construction sequencing and site logistics visualisations.
  • Liaise with designers, engineers, surveyors, and site teams to resolve model queries and design discrepancies.
  • Maintain version control, file naming conventions, and documentation in line with project and company standards.
  • Provide digital engineering support to site teams, including model-based setout data and as-built model updates.
  • Contribute to continuous improvement of BIM workflows, templates, and standard operating procedures.

Qualifications & Experience

  • Diploma or Degree in Building/Construction, Civil/Structural Engineering, Architecture, or a related discipline (or equivalent relevant experience).
  • 2–5 years' experience in a BIM drafting, digital engineering, or CAD/BIM technician role, ideally within infrastructure, civil, marine, or building construction.
  • Proficiency in Autodesk Revit, Auto CAD, and Civil 3D; working knowledge of Navisworks Manage essential.
  • Exposure to common data environments (BIM 360/Autodesk Construction Cloud, Trimble Connect, or similar) advantageous.
  • Familiarity with ISO 19650 principles and BIM Execution Plans is an advantage.
  • Experience with point cloud data, drone survey data, or laser scanning integration is a plus.
  • Basic scripting/automation exposure (Dynamo, Navisworks API) is a plus but not essential.

Skills & Attributes

  • Strong attention to detail and commitment to model/drawing accuracy.
  • Good spatial and technical understanding of construction methods and documentation.
  • Effective communicator, able to work collaboratively with design, engineering, and site delivery teams.
  • Well organised, able to manage multiple deliverables and deadlines across concurrent projects.
  • Proactive and solutions-focused, with a willingness to learn new tools and workflows.
  • Sound understanding of construction drawing conventions and industry documentation standards.
