We are seeking an experienced individual to join our team as a Senior Lecturer and establish a new teaching laboratory in the Hull and South Yorkshire Region. In this role, you will establish and manage a team of associate lecturers and laboratory technicians who deliver postgraduate laboratory training courses for industry and academic partners. The Senior Lecturer and their team of associate lecturers play a pivotal part in delivering a range of comprehensive molecular biology or mammalian cell culture courses that offer hands-on experiences with various techniques and methodologies. Key Responsibilities

  • Management: Work with the Regional Manager to identify and establish a new laboratory in the region. Responsibility for scientist recruitment and science team management (associate lecturers and laboratory technicians) including regular review of workload and progress. Responsibility for laboratory and teaching budgets. Responsibility for waste management. Opportunity to work with Senior Lecturers across other regions to develop wider team development.
  • Teaching: Provide teaching of mammalian cell culture, ELISA, Western Blotting, Microbiology, or PCR techniques as required. Use a variety of pedagogical techniques, such as small group teaching, practical work, student-centred learning, building on prior learning, skills and experience.
  • Health & Safety: Create and review all related risk assessments and make amendments in line with the relevant guidance. Ensure technicians, students and lecturing staff understand and follow laboratory health and safety. Ensure all team members complete the relevant health and safety assessments.
  • Administration and Pastoral Work: Complete assessments of students in line with company policies and the relevant qualification body guidelines. Contribute to formative and summative feedback and tasks related to students' work. Provide pastoral support and references to students during and after courses. Contribute to student admissions processes including interviews and selection panels.
  • Curriculum Development and Quality Assurance: Create and update written course materials and assessments, so they are fit for purpose and where necessary, conform to the regulations of awarding bodies. Engage with feedback on teaching to enhance quality and learner experience. Adopt reflective pedagogical practices and share learned experiences with the team to improve delivery and assessment. Attend standardisation and moderation meetings as and when required. Work with the Quality Assurance Manager to ensure the quality of course materials including assessments. Ensure that course equipment has been tested and any problems addressed so that courses are fit for purpose. Attend external conferences, training and COPD events.

Competency Criteria

  • Qualifications, Training & Knowledge: PhD in a relevant biological science – Essential. Understanding and ability to undertake research – Essential. PGCE or equivalent – Desirable.
  • Experience: 2+ years of experience in Molecular Biology, Immunology, Cell Biology, or Microbiology – Essential. Experienced in lecturing/teaching – Desirable. Experience in a regulated laboratory environment – Desirable. Experience in scientific project development & planning – Essential.
  • Skills & Behaviors: Strong communication skills with proven ability to use them to convey complex information to students and colleagues – Essential. Shows confidence in communication with external stakeholders and funding bodies – Essential. Well-developed organisational skills with the ability to coordinate a team, ensuring appropriate cover is provided – Essential. Strong ability to take initiative and work without supervision – Essential. Confidence in making decisions within area of expertise – Essential. Able to work efficiently and co-operatively as part of a team – Essential. Ability to review documentation and make amendments appropriately within set guidelines – Essential. Strong negotiation skills, with ability to reach agreements – Essential. Ability to analyse and solve problems – Essential. Ability to work calmly under pressure, and adapt readily to changing circumstances – Essential.
