We are looking for experienced Biology Practical Skills Experts to deliver A Level Biology required practical work and assess learners against the Common Practical Assessment Criteria (CPAC) and the required Apparatus and Techniques.

You will deliver practical sessions, assess learner performance and maintain records of learner progress so that practical endorsement outcomes can be communicated accurately to consortium examination centres and awarding organisations.

There may also be opportunities to upskill and assess adult learners who directly or indirectly support Level 3 Biology practical teaching and assessment within schools, colleges and tuition centres.

Successful applicants will receive a full day’s training to support their understanding of the current A Level Biology practical work assessment specification requirements common to AQA, Pearson Edexcel, Eduqas and OCR.

£1,000 per week (for weeks worked). Work is offered on a casual, ad hoc basis and is dependent on demand.

Key Responsibilities

Teaching and Assessment

  • Deliver small-group teaching to between 1 and 15 learners.
  • Adhere to company policies and procedures.
  • Maintain learner records of progress against assessment criteria.
  • Attend training and meetings.
  • Undertake associated administrative duties.
  • Test course equipment and troubleshoot any problems so that practical activities are fit for purpose and adapted accordingly.
  • Ensure learners are provided with sufficient opportunities to meet the required standards and complete the assessment successfully.
  • Complete learner assessments in line with regulatory requirements.

Health and Safety

  • Review all relevant provided risk assessments.
  • Take overall responsibility for health and safety during practical work sessions.
  • Ensure learners understand and follow health and safety guidance.
  • Ensure all learners complete the relevant health and safety assessments.

Person Specification

Essential Qualifications and Knowledge

  • BSc in Biology or a relevant Science Teaching degree.
  • A Level Practical Endorsement Certification, to be completed if successful.
  • Understanding of the British education sector.
  • Qualified Teacher Status and/or experience teaching within the Higher Education sector.

Desirable Qualifications

  • MSc or PhD in a relevant science subject.
  • Minimum of two years’ teaching experience.
  • Experience working with laboratory equipment.
  • Experience writing risk assessments.
  • Experience preparing chemical solutions.
  • Experience assessing A Level Science practical work.
  • Experience working within a multicultural setting.
  • Experience in quality assurance.
  • Experience working with SEN learners and adapting lessons to their needs.

  • Strong communication skills with a proven ability to convey complex information to learners and colleagues.
  • Ability to take initiative and work without supervision.
  • Confidence in making decisions within your area of expertise.
  • Ability to work efficiently and cooperatively as part of a team.
  • Ability to work calmly under pressure and adapt readily to changing circumstances.
  • Ability to review documentation and make appropriate amendments within set guidelines.
  • Strong negotiation skills, with the ability to reach agreements.
  • Ability to analyse and solve problems.
