The Best Connection are currently recruiting for an Architectural Technician to review, coordinate, and technically sign off commercial floor plan layout drawings, ensuring full compliance with current Building Regulations, statutory requirements, and relevant industry standards. The role supports the design and delivery by providing technical assurance, regulatory compliance oversight, and drawing approval for commercial units. This is for a 6 month contract on a full time, ongoing basis. Immediate start.
Key Responsibilities
- Review and technically approve commercial floor plan layouts prior to issue or submission
- Ensure designs comply with Building Regulations, including (where applicable):
- Fire safety and means of escape
- Accessibility (Approved Document M)
- Space standards, circulation, and occupancy
- Sanitary provision
- Ventilation and daylight
Day-to-Day Tasks
- Review incoming floor plan layouts and technical drawings (CAD / PDF)
- Mark up drawings with compliance comments and required amendments
- Cross-check layouts against relevant Approved Documents and guidance
- Attend design coordination meetings (virtual or in person)
- Respond to technical queries from the design or delivery team
- Update drawing registers and approval trackers
- Re-review amended drawings and confirm compliance closure
- Assist in preparing drawings or information for submissions when required
Required Skills & Experience
- Proven experience as an Architectural Technician, Architectural Technologist, or Technical Architect
- Strong knowledge of Building Regulations for commercial buildings
- Experience working on commercial units (retail, office, mixed-use, or similar)
- Ability to confidently review and approve technical drawings
- Strong attention to detail and problem-solving skills
- Clear communication skills with both technical and non-technical stakeholders
Desirable (But Not Essential)
- CIAT membership or chartered status
- Experience liaising directly with Building Control
- Familiarity with fire strategies and accessibility audits
- Experience working in fast-paced, multi-unit commercial environments
Authority & Limitations
- The role provides internal technical sign-off and compliance assurance
- Final statutory approval remains with Building Control or appointed dutyholders (where applicable)
