  • Apply now to be part of an extraordinary chapter in history

This is not just another archive role, it’s a chance to help shape the future of one of the most historically significant private estates in the UK.

The Bedford Estates is seeking a highly skilled and passionate Archives & Records Manager to lead the preservation, development and accessibility of the Russell family and Estate archives spanning centuries of British history and a diverse range of businesses including Woburn Abbey & Gardens, Woburn Safari Park, the Golf Club, the Bloomsbury Estate and the wider Woburn community.

With the upcoming reopening of Woburn Abbey and exciting developments across the Estate, this is a pivotal leadership role working directly with the Duke and Duchess of Bedford, the Trustees, and senior leaders across the organisation.

You will take ownership of the strategic direction and hands-on management of a vast and fascinating archive, ensuring its conservation, cataloguing, and relevance for both current operations and future generations. You’ll also play a vital role in supporting the Estate’s records management, helping to embed systems and practices that protect and enhance the integrity of the organisation.

We’re looking for someone who has:

  • Degree and a postgraduate qualification in Archives and records management recognised by the Archives and Records Association.
  • Significant experience in archives, ideally within a heritage or historic landed estate context, excellent palaeography skills and experience of working with 16th and 17th century documents.
  • Experience of identifying and prioritising conservation of mixed archives, and experience of environmental monitoring and insect pest management.
  • Knowledge of organisational policies and procedures for records management.
  • Excellent communication skills at all levels.
  • Strong IT skills, including experience with archive cataloguing software, databases, and Microsoft Office tools. Consideration of health and safety, including experience of manual handling, working at height and lone working.
  • Adaptable and flexible approach managing a varied workload

The role is based full-time on-site at Woburn, with occasional travel to the Estate’s properties in London, Bedfordshire and regional record offices.

This is a rare and rewarding opportunity to protect the past while shaping the future of a living estate, one with a story still being written.
