Role: Technician – Plumbing
Location: Bedford College – Kempston Plumbing Centre
Salary/Benefits: Salary is between £23,557 and £26,754 per annum DOE and Qualifications, 27 days annual leave plus Bank holidays, People’s Pension, Retail and Leisure Discounts, excellent professional and personal development opportunities, accessing college courses.
Hours/Weeks: 37 hours per week – 52 weeks per year
Contract Type: Permanent – Full Time

About The Role
We are currently seeking a Technician in Plumbing to join our Construction department at The Bedford College Group.
As a Technician, you play an important role in the success of our students through:
- Workshop & Practical Learning Support – Provide hands‑on assistance to lecturers and trainers in Plumbing workshops (and wider Construction areas when required), supporting learners to develop practical skills effectively.
- Tools, Equipment & Workshop Maintenance – Maintain and repair tools/equipment, prepare work areas, manage consumables, and ensure workshops remain safe, clean, organised and fully compliant with Health & Safety requirements.
- Stock Control & Systems Management – Develop secure systems for stock control, manage equipment sign‑in/out processes, complete annual inventories, place orders in line with financial procedures and monitor expenditure against budgets.
- Student Support, Behaviour & Compliance – Support learners in achieving qualifications, manage breaches of discipline appropriately, uphold safeguarding and EDI standards and ensure all workshop activities follow College policies.
- College‑Wide Engagement & Risk Management – Assist with marketing/engagement events, contribute to site security, complete risk and COSHH assessments and undertake additional duties as required by the Head of Construction.
About You
- Qualifications & Trade Background – Level 2 NVQ/Diploma in a construction trade, GCSE‑level English and maths (or willingness to achieve), with practical experience working in the plumbing industry.
- Technical Skills & Safe Working Practice – Strong understanding of safe working practices related to plumbing equipment, broader construction knowledge, and the ability to prepare, maintain and repair tools and hand equipment.
- Learner Support & Professional Values – Consistently supports a high‑quality learning environment, promotes equality and diversity, works in line with organisational values (Student Focus, High Performance, Respect, Openness, Honesty) and represents the organisation professionally.
- Communication, Teamwork & Independence – Effective communicator across all channels, self‑motivated, able to work independently with minimal supervision, positively contribute to team performance and maintain accurate stock inventories.
