Location: Shuttleworth College – Equine Centre

Salary/Benefits: Salary 30,915 – 41,085 per annum, 27 days annual leave plus Bank holidays, People’s Pension, Retail and Leisure Discounts, professional development opportunities.

Hours/Weeks: 37 hours per week – 52 weeks per year

Contract Type: Permanent – Full Time

About the Role

We are seeking an Assistant Manager for our Equine Centre in the Animal Science department at The Bedford College Group.

Responsibilities

  • Support the day-to-day operation of the equine centre, maintaining high standards of presentation, organisation, and operational efficiency as an educational resource for students.
  • Deliver excellent standards of horse care and welfare, including monitoring health, coordinating veterinary support, riding horses, and implementing appropriate exercise and schooling programmes.
  • Prepare horses and equipment for practical sessions, supervise students undertaking yard duties, and ensure safe, effective learning experiences that promote industry standards.
  • Maintain safe working environments across the equine centre and paddocks, oversee safe use of equipment and machinery, and ensure accurate welfare and operational records are maintained.
  • Work collaboratively with staff, students, and external stakeholders, provide excellent customer service, support staff development, and maintain up-to-date industry knowledge through continuous professional development.

Qualifications and Experience

  • Level 3 Horse Management qualification, BHS Level 3 Groom with Riding, GCSE English and Maths (or equivalent); willingness to undertake further qualifications such as First Aid.
  • Recent equine industry experience with strong knowledge of horse care, husbandry, current industry practices, yard safety, and ability to school, hack, and lunge a variety of horses.
  • Experience working with young people in training environments, excellent communication skills and ability to create a welcoming, supportive, inclusive learning environment.
  • Proven ability to work independently and collaboratively, prioritise workloads, meet deadlines, maintain high standards, and contribute positively to team objectives and organisational values.
